  • Fresh install with new extra HDD - How to access sounds from old projects?

Hi,
I recently had a PC crash and while reinstalling my OS and Sonar I also added a new HDD on which I put my soundbanks and all.
Now I do have a backup of my old projects (Cakewalk Projects with the subfolders Audio Data, Picture Cash and my personal folder with my projects).

Since the new HDD is obviously a new location each now when I want to open a project most files can not be found (except for the native synths).

I know this is probably a 101 question but I just can't seem to figure out how to point Sonar to the new HDD and folders so that I can access my old projects with all it's samples and 3rd party synths (which now also have a more proper organised locations).

Any help would be much appreciated!

Per-project audio folders can be located anywhere regardless of the default project folder defined in Preferences > File > Folder Locations
The picture cache does not need to be copied, it will be rebuilt as necessary
The location of the global audio and picture cache folders are defined in Preferences > File > Audio Data

Third party software may need to be reinstalled. It may not be possible to simply copy the software and expect it to work.

Thanks for your reply, yet the preference menu is exactly which I cant seem to relocate correctly.
For some additional info: the error message I get is: 'Find Missing Audio'.

I copied my old project files to the default directory: C:\Cakewalk Projcts and Sonar does find the (old) projects.
What seems to go wrong is the path to the Wave Files:

The standard path is C:\Cakewalk Content\Audio Library and I used to have all my samples here since this is also where the native sound files reside and I wanted them to be in the same directory but now I have put my samples on the new HDD (B:\) and made shortcuts from the standard path to the new B:\ HDD.

I also kept the structure of the subfolders intact so it seems to me only the root (C:\ or B:\) is the culprit.

When I let Sonar scan for the missing audio it only scans my C:\ drive and not the B:\ and I see no option to add this drive to the search..

I also tried changing the path of the Audio Library to the new B:\ HDD but even then Sonar doesn't find the files.

PS: Ofcourse I reinstalled the 3rd party synths and this all works fine.

Shortcuts typically don't work, you need to use the DOS mklink with the /d or /j option to make the proper type of links instead of shortcuts.

For example, if I relocated the "Audio Library" from "C:\Cakewalk Content\Audio Library" to "B:\Audio Library" I would execute the following at the cmd line:
mklink /j "C:\Cakewalk Content\Audio Library" "B:\Audio Library"

If I relocated the entire "C:\Cakewalk Content" to "B:\Cakewalk Content", the cmd line would be:
mklink /j "C:\Cakewalk Content" "B:\Cakewalk Content"

Hmm..I'm not that familiar (or comfortable) with DOS so before I try this let me see if I understand:

I did try changing the path C:\Cakewalk Content to B:\Soundbanks (my current sample folder) but even then I keep having the same problem.

Does this mean Sonar needs a parent folder named \Cakewalk Content\ in order for it to find the samples?
And is there no way to have Sonar read two locations?

"Cakewalk Content" usually contains a bunch of stuff. Look in the Preferences > File > Folder Locations if you have not already modified the default layout. "Cakewalk Content" holds templates, icons, CAL scripts. It is also the default location for loops and one shots directory.

If you are trying to integrate data into the existing "C:\Cakewalk Content", the directories will have to be linked in, shortcuts won't work. But it is not clear what B:\Soundbanks contains and what software is using it.

"Missing Audio" errors in projects usually means, you are not using per-project audio files and the projects are not finding their audio files in the the global audio folder. The global audio folder is a single directory maintained in Preferences > File > Audio Data. There is no way to link directories into the global audio folder and have the data found by projects.

First of all let me say I'm very gratefull for the time you're taking to help me out here. Thanksalot, really!

B:\Soundbanks is simply a partition filled with samples, loops and such...

I guess I really need to read up on file management -something I have neglected up to now but for now a last recap:

If I use the mlink-command to relocate the C:\Cakewalk Content\Audio Library folder (including the loops and one-shots) to B:\Audio Library\ and put my \Soundbanks as a subfolder in it will this solve my problems?

So create a substructure of B:\Audio Library\Soundbanks\ with my subfolders in it (\Electronic,\Folk,\Drums etc.)

It is not necessary to link anything at this point. I am not sure if I was trying to solve a problem you may not have. You can extent the media browser in to include data on any drive. Navigate to the loop location on the b: drive using the media browser and click the "Save Content Location Preset" button.

This has nothing to do with "Find Missing Audio" errors. Are there specific errors you are trying to resolve or just trying to integrate data on the B: drive?

I see, my bad... Sorry! I already added the B: drive in the media browser yes and this works fine.
I'm trying to solve the problem of loading my old projects which cannot seem to find samples I used.

So in an effort to be more specific:

- I used to have all my own samples in the C:\Cakewalk\Content\Audio Library folder- Now I have my samples in a different folder (B:\Soundbanks)
- When I load my projects I get the "Find missing Audio" error
- Regardless of to which locations I point the folder settings the missing audio files cannot be found
- In addition Sonar only scans for the missing audio on my C:\partition and not B:\
- I do see the missing audio files are not located in the Audio Library folder but they never have been since I did keep a good routine of backing up this folder so Sonar used to be able to find the files anyway.

I'm not sure how to provide you with more info on my problem..

Ok, you have projects setup in a way they are dependent on external audio files. This is not a good idea and now you know why. I have never used SONAR this way. I believe the new installation must be exactly as before because the projects have the sample paths hardwired in the project rather than relying on copies in the their per-project audio folders. Short of copying the data into the folders exactly as it was before, links are the only other solution. Was the contents of B:\Soundbanks located in a directory like "C:\Cakewalk\Content\Audio Library\Soundbanks". If so, linking it back will be easy. At the cmd line:
mklink /j "C:\Cakewalk\Content\Audio Library\Soundbanks" B:\Soundbanks
