  • [Solved] Copy a midi track?

I have a TTS-1 track setup that plays both Bass and Drums.
In order to get more control over them separately (send to separate buss) I thought I could simply copy the midi track and mute the bass on one and the drums on the other.
But the copy doesn't play. What would the proper setup be?
The one that plays has a keyboard symbol on it, In= my soundcard, out = Drum buss (??how is it playing the TTS1 without being routed to it?)
The one that doesn't, has a midi symbol and in = soundcard and out = TTS1
Some days I think I'm never going to figure out the routing concept for midi.
I've tried copying both to no avail. I'm obviously missing something very basic.

The track with the keyboard icon is an instrument track. An instrument track is a hybrid track consisting of an audio and a MIDI track. The reason there is no reference to the TTS-1 visible in the instrument rack is because the routing is handled inside the track. It is possible to split an instrument track into it's audio and MIDI tracks by right-clicking the track header and select "Split Instrument Track"

The TTS-1 can handle 16 MIDI channels and assign the output to 4 audio tracks but it may be easier to create two separate instances of TTS-1, one for drums and one for bass.

To use the multiple audio outputs of a single instance of TTS-1, click the system button on the TTS-1 UI, then click the options button on the System Settings dialog. The Options dialog has an "Output Assign" tab which allows assigning the 16 incoming channels to the 4 audio outputs. Add audio tracks to the project for the additional TTS-1 audio outputs.

Ok I copied the two trax
I went into TTS1 and changed the drums to CH2
The original now only plays the bass. Great.
But the copy only plays the bass as well.
I tried changing the midi settings in the Inspector but haven't found the one that will play the Channel 2 for the drums yet.

Don't use "Clone Track..." to create a copy of an instrument track. To create a second instance of TTS-1 with the same MIDI data, insert the synth and copy the MIDI data.

Why the second instance of TTS-1?  It's 16 channel multi-timbral.  He just needs bass on one MIDI channel, drums on another, and there's room to load 14 more instruments if he wants. -- Maybe I misunderstood the needs here?

I suspect he was aware I was struggling with the concepts and went for the simpler thing?
I couldn't seem to make the new tracks point to the TTS channels

Yes, that was my intention based on history beyond this thread. I did describe using a single TTS-1 instance in post #3 and can elaborate more if necessary.

Yes I agree with Randy.
TTS-1 has it's own 4 buss mixer, 2 efx sends and lots of ways to control the sound of each instrument. If you only owned one soft, synth TTs-1 would be one of the best to use.

I never use the instrument tracks.  each midi part has its own midi track  the ones with the midi symbol.
You can even split your drum parts into individual tracks.
When you insert TTS-1 you have the option of choosing the 4 outputs. This will pop up with 4  versions of TTS-1 as the audio outputs. Don't put midi in those tracks, leave them blank.
Then as scook has given instruction for you can assign each of the 16 channels to one of these 4 buses.
FYI Channel 10 is the default midi channel for all drums, best to keep it like that or you'll run into problems.
The beauty of keeping all your midi tracks separated is it makes it easy to then try different soft synths and even double up on sounds.

PS The TTS-1 GUI mixer is under utilized by most people, You can improve the sound of many of the patches with eq and even tweak the tuning and efxs.
It's also quicker to browse all the banks of patches from the GUI. Right click next to the volume slider and it opens a huge list of sounds. There are way more organs and pianos hidden there as example.
