Get yourself a copy of Sonar X3 Power. It's a great way to learn the software and what it can do. The book help me a great deal to find my way around and to learn what the effects do and when to use them. The book also has tutorials for you to work through.

On top of the other suggestions I'd like to add spend LOTS of time reading this forum. Particularly this tab to learn about Sonar, the Techniques tab to pick up general knowledge and the Songs forum so you can hear what kind of results others are getting and some insight into how they did it.

A lot of it won't make sense at first but as you go through the tuts, manual, vids and whatever other resources you can get your hands on you'll start to get an idea of what's up and people are constantly posting links to other learning resources.

I came here two years ago and had absolutely NO idea what the heck was going on. Now I can use almost every major function in Sonar and produce full songs from start to finish without too much trouble. They may not sound super polished yet but I'm working on that. lol

Good luck and if you get stumped ask questions. These guys are super helpful. Cheers.

Another option is available at Guitar Center.  If your location has one nearby, they offer free DAW learning sessions on Saturday mornings which are appx 1 hour in length.  Altho they only feature Mac based software, there are basic topics covered which can be applied universally to most any recording software.
Best,

Don't waste your time like I did. Goto Groove3. Spend an hour a day for one or two weeks learning you tool and you will be laughing. Cheers

A simple 'r' will really help. It will change "learning YOU tool" to "learning YOUR tool" which is what I think you meant. :)

I always accidentally miss out the last letters when I typ. Sorry :).

I have never used a DAW or created music.  I purchased Sonar x3 and a LaunchKey 49 to try and learn...

One further piece of advice.  You will probably soon come to realise that you need a decent audio interface or soundcard.  Whatever you do, don't buy something without seeking advice here first.

Ha ha, no mastery yet. Been very busy! Thank you very much to everyone who responded and gave advice. I will take everything into account. I will be looking into Groove3 for sure and the Guitar Center tip was great as well!
I am looking to use mostly midi, with a touch of my voice and acoustic electric gutar. Emphasis on the midi. I'm looking to create chiptunes style music crossed with electronica/ dub... Now that I wrote it out it seems like I'm trying way to much haha. I should probably simplify my sound and perfect each aspect then try to combine them after having a greater understanding of the individual parts.
As far as an audio and midi interfaces go, I am using a tascam us-600(audio interface) and a Launchkey 49(midi keyboard) thatI purchased prior to joining the forum. I'm not sure how they compare to higher grade equipment but I was on a budget so I allocated accordingly.

I appreciate everyones advice and I'll post again when I hit a wall.

Have a great one!

Another option is to find someone local who already knows music production and see if they are willing to spend some time with you to help you get the basics down.  There may even be a few people here that might be in your local area and wouldn't mind showing you the basics.

Hey GunGreenEyes and everyone else, I'm exactly in the same boat. I just bought Sonar X3 Professional on Steam, just ordered the Garrigus book at Amazon, I'm watching Cakewalk videos over at YouTube, been playing with the program and listening to the sound samples in the program, marveled at the Matrix view, and generally been enjoying and entertaining myself.  Nice that there is a good forum here as well. Good times and thanks for the suggestions which even though they aren't for me they certainly are for me as well. :)  The magic of a forum.

Scott's X3 Power is a great resource to have on the desktop. Even though he's using X1, Bill Edstoms' "Mixing with Sonar" on Groove3.com is a great video to get familiar with the Sonar workflow. Take your time and post questions to the forum. There's a lot of great people willing to help here.

OT: Gadlaw - Are you the gadlaw from Truefire Forums. Welcome aboard. You put a lot of effort helping people and I hope you get as involved with the Sonar family.
