  • Looping softsynth part causing clicks and pops

This is an ongoing annoyance for me and I wondered if anyone else has experienced it.

When I loop a softsynth part, I get clicks and pops during the loop. It's usually just before the loop end point. It has nothing to do with buffers or CPU overload, and the clicks stop as soon as I take it out of loop.

Make sure your loop points are at Zero Crossings. You cannot interrupt a sound in mid stream without some of artifact. so make your loop points on Zero Crossings

Not sure if this will help but there is a setting to add a slight faded on start/stop of playback that eliminates pops that occur when stopping in the middle of an audio dense section.

It is in Preferences > Audio - Playback and Recording then adjust the Fade On Start/Stop times.

It may not effect soft synth stuff or looped sections but it got rid of all my annoying pops when stopping/starting playback so it's worth checking out. I'm sure you are already aware of this feature though.

Cheers.

I'm talking about MIDI driven softsynths.

Yep Shark...same here...played with every possible setting and got no where...only my pops are at the beginning of the loop and then as time goes on the audio starts to disintegrate...seems to only happen with the kick drum in a drum loop, though...I have a very strange problem...

I don't have that problem Beepster, maybe it's because I work overwhelmingly with soft synths? The pops in question right before a looped section reaches the end loop point. It's as if Sonar's getting itself ready to loop back to the start and it freaks out and hiccups.

I get all of these problems with loops. Someone from Cakewalk (I think it was Bill) said in an earlier thread that they were looking into problems with MIDI looping. My drums go comically out of sync if I loop them too long. But it also happens with synth parts as well, not just timing problems but also missed notes. For instance I was just recently looping a synth bass part that was made up of fast 16 notes. After about a minute of looping it started dropping random notes, and a couple of minutes later it was dropping more notes than it was playing. It's a good job we don't have loop points set when bouncing down to audio, although I can imagine this is a huge problem if you need to use a loop during a live performance.

Yeah, I didn't think that would fix it but it was worth a shot. It sounds like it's just confusing the synth when it hits the loop points. I'd try to set the loop points in between MIDI notes or if that's not possible temporarily muting any notes that surround the loop points.

Oh and maybe increasing your buffers would help if you are just mixing or if you are recording using a lighter synth to capture the part then switching it over to the one you want afterward.

IDK... just tossing out ideas.

Cheers.

This actually makes me feel a little better Shark...that is exactly what has happened to me with drum parts. I haven't looped much else...hopefully the bakers are on this...it is quite annoying having to restart the loop over and over!

Don't think that would work unfortunately - I'm working now with a MIDI loop with notes that fall exactly at the start of the loop and finish exactly at the end. It's definitely not a buffer problem either, I've tried upping the buffer considerably and it doesn't help. Also, as soon as I remove the loop points, the clicks stop. That's why I'm tempted to think that Sonar is choking as it prepares itself to loop back to the start point. It's almost as if it's nervous, lol.
