  • Can You Help Me Find a Sound Card Work-Around?

Hello--

I have an Echo Layla 3G that seems to work, and work well in every respect with my new DAW...

...except. I need to change the channels on my main outs within X2 so that I can monitor my mix out of my studio monitors and it no workie.

The project was recorded and edited on the 3G channels 1/2 where I've been using headphones. Now, I need to change the main outs in X2 to 3G channels 5/6 to route them through my studio monitors, but when I click on the channels in the main outs--in Sonar nothing happens.

I've tried reinstalling the sound card drivers, and of course a reboot of the system, but nothing works. In the past I went to Windows Sound on the Control Panel and made the desired channels in the sound card the defaults, and then I can change the channels in Sonar--but this time it won't let me.

I'm sad to say my experience with Mario at Echo (he seems to be their only tech) has been useless, so I don't even want to try again.

After buying the new DAW and upgrading my UAD card from 1 to 2, I don't have any cash to upgrade my sound card that is only about 3 years old. I did the research and I prefer PCI over USB or FW -- so I want to make it work.

Does anyone know of a way I can "force" X2 to let me change my main outs to different channels- or maybe some routing magic outside of Sonar I can use?

My only other option is to bounce my mix in Sonar and pull it into Sound Forge or Wavelab--but then I have to go back to Sonar to make any tweaks, and then rinse and repeat--not ideal.

Thanks,

I have that exact interface and gave up on it for my new DAW because it was causing problems and frankly I found it a little confusing to use BUT one thing you have not mentioned is whether you have done anything within the Layla's control software.

I'm sure I could understand the Layla's in/out set up and the software much better now that I know more but I recall having a hell of a time trying to sync up my outputs to what my DAW was doing. You gotta cycle through multiple screens in the Layla software to get at the various channels and stuff. It may be just a matter of finding the right page for the 5/6 outs and unmuting them or something. Then maybe it'll work.

Those Layla's are OLD though and I'm not even sure whether they are keeping up with their drivers. I just kept mine because it works on my old XP/Nuendo DAW (and actually did on my Win7/Sonar DAW but would dropout because of the bridged legacy PCI issue) and because I can use it via the optical ADAT in on my Focusrite Scarlett 18i6 to get an extra 4 or 8 input connections as a slave unit.

I also hang onto it because the resale price is... not good. I'm hoping they release a new PCIe card that I can hook the box up to and update the drivers.

Good luck. Sorry I can't help more.

When you go to Sonars Preferences / Audio drivers do the 5/6 outputs show on the list there? Or are they grayed out.

You know, I remember a routing interface when I had the 24/96 model before, but I thought they got rid of that for the 3G version I have now.

Let me check and see if there is a routing software I can use, because that just might work.

Thanks

Nope not grayed out. I can change channels on tracks and buses. Just not the main outs.

In the CV you should see all your outs and you should have your master buss going to which ever stereo out pair you want. You do not have to goto preferences to do this.

Oh yeah, man... it should still be there. I had to update the Layla drivers for Win7 when I built my new DAW and it came with a software i/o panel. It should be in your programs menu. Definitely take a look or see if it's installed. I honestly don't see how it's working without it though unless SOnar is just recognizing it in some generic way (which would be impressive actually) or why the Echo support guy didn't mention it.

Remember though you have to cycle through the different screens to get at all the i/o's. When you first open it up it might seem like you are looking everything but you are not. IIRC there are tabs on the right hand side of the interface you need to click through to get at the various channels. It's whack and I always hated how that crap was set up. I love my Scarlett in comparison but the 3G is a nice interface. Just pain in the dick to use sometimes.

Good luck.

And just to be sure... and it has probably already been mentioned BUT double check for me anyway...

Go to Edit > Preferences > Audio - Devices and make SURE you have all the ins/outs of the Layla displayed and checked off. You need to have every one of the inputs AND outputs checked off otherwise you will not be able to use them in Sonar. I'm starting to recall having that problem.

Cheers.

OK, I was way off. I was thinking about the routing interface for my old eMagic MMT8 MIDI Engine--the Layla only has the console, and as far as I know, I can't route the output of channels 1/2 to outputs 5/6 from within the Echo control panel.

I'm in my studio now and I'm going to get heavily into this because if there is no solution, I'm going to be forced to buy a new sound card--for one (major) feature.

Anyone have any other ideas, believe me when I say, I'd appreciate them!
