I'm not sure where to post this subject so I try here. I added a new 1TB SATA hard drive to my PC. I have a C drive, D drive and the new one I labeled S Drive. I need to find out how and what to move to the new drive. My PC is centered around Sonar and that's all I use this PC for. I'm not computer savvy so I'm asking for help in the forum. Thanks for your help in advance!

How much room do you currently have on your C: drive? http://www.wikihow.com/Check-Your-Hard-Disk-Space  If you have plenty of space, you really shouldn't move anything, but...

What is on your D: drive? Are C: and D: both physical drives?

If you have sample libraries , say something from Native Instruments/Garritan Personal Orchestra/Amplitube, those are good candidates (you would have to point in the program to the new location ( http://www.native-instruments.com/en/support/knowledge-base/show/500/can-i-move-my-native-instruments-software-or-libraries-to-another-location-on-my-computer/ )

All of you project files would conceptually go to D: if you used S: for moving samples. But a second backup copy wouldn't hurt on S: for redundancy's sake.

Bad idea to move any programs or the like to that drive.

Let us know.

tsk tsk Bill forgot our conversation already?

move your audio and projects folder to S so you have a separate path to read write audio and midi data

go to preferences

FILE
Folder Locations
move Project Files, Wave Files, and Video Files to S: Make new folders with the same names and MOVE not COPY the files existing in the current locations there

FILE
AAudio Data

move to S:\Cakewalk Projects\Audio Data

Picture Folder

move to S:\Cakewalk Projects\Picture Cache

I would not move ,,, but copy.you want at least 2 copies of everything on board. Then start directing your projects to the new drive. Then back up to an external as well.

By the time I got back to my PC I started but couldn't remember which files from the Folder Locations. I was going to move the project folders but figured I might as well check the forums just in case. You already helped me way more than I could ask so I didn't want to pester you with my complete and total ignorance. I did move the project files, audio, Picture Cache, and video. Everything is working fine! Thanks for the help

You're just asking for location headaches....I put everything on a 1000 Gig hard drive, (My C: Drive) and forget about it. Works great, no headaches. Do back up your drive.

Really??

I havent had a single "location" problem.

My Programs reside on my OS C: Drive
My Audio and projects reside on my S: drive
My VST Libraries reside on my L: drive

Sonar reads and writes to the S drive, my VSTs pull their libraries from L, and it  chugs along just fine.

As long as you point to the proper paths it works, really.
Sure some programs(some vsts, for one) insist on putting files in certain unmovable locations , but fo rthe most part you can change pointer  paths.

I have had this setup for years and it sure is a housekeeping breeze plus performance gets a boost and all your eggs are not in one basket.

But hey, thats my experience.

I do agree with you about backups, especially with irreplaceable data , such as projects.A complete image of the OS drive  makes re install a lot easier for sure.

Yes really. I tried using multiple SSD hard drives, one for East West Libraries, one for Ivory II Libraries, one for Sonar....it was a major pain in the neck keeping everything working properly. Fresh installs were very difficult as programs had to be specifically directed to the right spot and still sometimes still wouldn't find the samples....Major pain in the neck. Now I have everything on my C:drive and everything runs smooth and no issues with any of the programs.

well don't know what your issue is but I have EW symphonic gold, Fab Four, Gypsy, and solo violin, and the browser goes right to the libraries ,,loads and plays fine.
now NI was cantankerous , but after running the rescan it shook out, now I see there is an NI app that searches for libraries and points everything in their right direction.

So like different snowflakes, no two users  experiences are the same.
