Slightly OT, I've always found it baffling that something as basic as exporting to mp3 is considered an "extra" in what is supposed to be a high end DAW. When you consider the things you can do it's pretty lame to have to jump through hoops or pay extra to be able to do this.

In the end it's a question of money, of course. Even though Lame is free, it doesn't mean CW can attach it to SONAR without a charge. So, they've decided to leave the decision to the customer, whether to pay for it in SONAR or get it free from the vendor.

To the OP: Just to confirm, is there anything different in the projects that the encoder could handle compared to the ones giving the error message? Melodyne clips unbounced, V-Vocal, anything? Major updates, new VSTs?

Thumbs up on Aaron's Sonar Patch. I started using it a couple years ago and it works like a charm.

it works in other projects.
this error only happens in these 2 projects I was working yesterday.
will investigate what may be causing this...there is no melodyne involved...only one uad-2 plug, PC, and waves L2...and only two tracks...

.
Yes, but we're talking peanuts here in the grand scheme of things. I'd rather pay a small amount extra in the first place and have a fully functioning DAW. It's hard to believe that the minimal extra cost for this would be a deal breaker for anyone.

As for the OP, if it's only two tracks you could try importing the audio into a new project and see what happens then. Would this at least establish if the problem is plug-in related or not ?

This is discussed many times, over and over.

CW makes the right call and pays the owners of mp3 code for the use of it's IP.
CW chooses to charge it's customers once to have unlimited use of it's own mp3 conversion within CW products.

It's that simple.

I am glad they don't add an extra charge every time I purchase a new version of Sonar.

Don't want to hijack the thread so let's just agree to differ.

Since the original issue seems to be on its way to a resolution given that there are only a couple specific projects where it doesn't work, a couple thoughts about MP3.

As noted, if Cakewalk includes the MP3 encoder, they have to absorb the costs. For one program, that's not a big deal. But it's compatible with Sonar, Music Creator, Home Studio, etc. If the encoder was included in every program going out, the license fees would add up to a lot of money for functionality that a) not everyone uses, and b) is available for free in iTunes not it's not essential for Sonar.

Some users like an a la carte approach, some like everything bundled so by definition, one set of people will not like the way it's being handled but the other will. This is why "let's just agree to differ" is the only conclusion that makes any sense.

On an unrelated note, if you do a lot of work with MP3 conversion on a professional basis, nothing beats the Sonnox Fraunhofer Pro-Codec plug-in. It's expensive (around $400) but it also does AAC, lossless compression, real-time audition of multiple files, surround, difference comparison (i.e., you can hear just the artifacts the MP3 generates), etc. It's overkill for most people, but it's incredibly effective and the functionality is off the hook.
