hi everyone, this is what I want to do. I want to send a song to someone running pro-tools, I did this before with sonar 6 and if I remember it was a nightmare. what I "think" I need to do is save all the tracks separately as DATA files? what else I remember is I had a hard time lining the tracks up so everything starts when it's supposed to. can anyone help me with this?

Just export all tracks at one time, making sure you CTL-A the tracks so you select all of them. Then put your export source as tracks and you'll get all your tracks exported and they will line up, if they line up in the project you are exporting it from.

Do not use DAT files. You need to use audio files, like WAV or AIF

If you used data files it means you sent  MP3-files. They're data files, not audio.

I know a few people who've had success exporting Sonar's raw files using OMF. Of course that won't do you much good with soft synths, effects, region FX, etc. so you would have to render them first.

I exported some OMF files from Sonar a loooooong time ago just to see if they'd work, and they did. You might consider doing a short test project, exporting it, and seeing if the person with Pro Tools can read it.

OMF is a good way to go if there is no soft synths. To be honest though, it's a lot of work for the other guy as far as naming tracks. Also, Sonar's OMF seems wonky. Sometimes tracks are lost or parts of them. The good news, when it works, is that everything is lined up perfect. Still, when imported the tracks will be named audio 1, audio 2 ETC.

You can still achieve the same thing with CJ's suggestion. The only thing I would do is save the project with a different name then  delete all the effects and EQ settings. The drawback to CJ's suggestion is when you export, all the files will be stereo. You can't choose some stereo and some mono. One way around that is to set all the track outputs directly to your AI and export them twice to different folders. The just get rid of the stereo tracks that should be mono and get rid of the mono tracks that should be stereo. The tracks names will still need to be edited by the other guy but what they are will be apparent as they will be named, "song name" bass drum, "song name" snare ETC.

"editing here"  I did not try this but IIRC, you may be able to select which tracks you want to export and then just select the stereo ones for a stereo export then a second export selecting the mono tracks for a mono export. "end edit"

The only other thing I would do is export the tracks as broadcast wave. They will be time stamped. I believe, not positive, that has to do with syncing in the host DAW? I just went through all this and for me, OMFs were, though a clever option, more work than they were worth.
