Hi, I listened to the second version.

I would still take that bell-like ep down a hair, and the strings in the right side could be pulled back a bit.

Your vocals I think are doubled in the chorus? I'd recommend that technique for the verses, too, it sounds nice and full.

It's a nice tune, wouldn't be out of place in the early 1960's! Or maybe the later '60's! Or maybe it's the early 80's, with the Thompson Twins? One of those . . .

Listen to the drums - biiig reverb. Listen to the strings and ep - hardly any. If that is what you are going for, then there you have it, but one approach is to reverb things roughly equal so they sound more cohesive, like they were all in the same room or on the same stage. I dunno, I read it in a magazine somewhere!

As far as melody goes, it's very catchy indeed!

cheers,
-Tom

This version works much better, Terry. The piano is still a little to strong. Perhaps Eq'ing out some of the lower freqs on it would help it to sit better in the mix?

I suggest you drop the ep melody in the chorus to give the vocal melody more attention. Also could drop it in a later verse for a little while and then start again. The ep melody is good but i think there is too much of it. Otherwise the mix is a lot improved and the song is great.
Edit: It works like it is just great but my humble opinion is put less ep melody, but others probably disagree.

This is without the ep. Please let me know what you think.

After Tom's thoughts, Worked on it again. I just saw them today. I think I'm getting Closer. I didn't record a 2nd vocal for the verse, so couldn't do the same thing as the chorus. I tried to work it a bit.

Nice song Terry - I really like the chord progression.
I agree with the mix comments - there seems to be heavy compression on the electric piano that ducks the rest of the mix when it is played

Hey Terry, well, I can relate to the lyrics for sure.  This has an appealing sound to it.  Did you ever think of a more pulsing bass for this?  And, it really needs some "heavenly" backing vocals -- some oohs and aahs in the right places...like the chorus... would really sweeten it so much. Perhaps some jangly melodic guitar lines?  You've got something good here that just needs some tweaking.
