MIDI and instrument tracks both record MIDI data. In order for a MIDI track to be heard it's output must be routed to a synth and the synth output must be routed to an audio track. Instrument tracks are a combination of a MIDI track and audio track; the MIDI-synth-audio routing is handled internally in the track. It is possible you have been using instrument tracks in previous projects.

I'm thinking we need an FR to make all record arming buttons look like the Punch icon when it's enabled.

+1 Great idea. I'd say the record button displays the letter P when a punch region is set, just like the button displays the letter Q when Input Quantize in enabled.

when you say "routing" does that mean the track I/o?

Yea, that's exactly what I mean. It inlcudes all in and outs for all associated tracks for that soft Synth.

Punch range enabled somewhere later in the project?

That was it, thank you!
