Sorry to be posting this here but need a quick answer.

Up until about a week ago I could play soundcloud in firefox and now it plays but there's no sound.
Soundcloud plays fine in IE but don't want to use that.
Anyone had this happen to them and found an answer?

My guess is it's one of firefox's applications has changed it's default.
There are so many applications in firefox that relate to audio but how the hell do I know which one relates to soundcloud ?

It's working fine here (FF 29.0.1). I think it might be a flash player issue. Do you have Flash Block installed by any chance ?

That's the version I'm running too, I don't have flash block so that's not it.

I might just completely unistall and clean the registry out and reinstall to see if that fixes it soon as I'm running out of ideas.

No problem here with firefox. You sure that something in IE did not take over. I had to re-install IE for some other program while I was not even using it and had un-installed it, but default settings should not do anything in IE.
Otherwise for Firefox this may help (I am not sure if it will or not).
But perhaps you should un-install Firefox and then check for a folder that is Mozilla and stragglers (files) in that folder that you know all programs may leave behind and then check the Registry also with regedit getting up and using the Find and Find Next for anything Mozilla or Firefox in the registry and deleting those and then re-install it.

It appears to be related to some update on the Soundcloud side, possibly with Flash. I had the same issue recently only inverse. Everything fine one day, NG the next. No o/s, app updates on my side. FF was the only browser that would play any Soundcloud file. IE, Safari and Chrome all choked.

My solution may not be much help. I upgraded both my laptop and rack mount to Win 8.1.1. It was planned and happened to resolve the issue.

best of luck...

Well I gave in and unistalled firefox and trashed the registry and all is working.

Only annoying things is that despite saving my profile and placing it in it's new location none of my passwords are showing

I had the same problem a while back: Firefox stopped making any sound. I was able to backrev Flash and get it working again, but then all the browsers started complaining that I was using an "unsecure" version of Flash. I waited a few months and used Chrome in the meantime, then updated Firefox last week and all's well again.

I started to have strange issues with Soundcloud so I switched back to soundclick .  Soundcloud will not let me do any editing or updating songs. I'm just trying Reverbnation too but boy , don't sign up for newsletters they'll send you 20 a day...SO right now soundclick is in my good books,,, Oh and I gave up on Firefox a year ago, wayyyy to many interruptions for updates and add on bull. Chome so far seem OK except It tracks your shopping history and such,,, oh well.. nothing changes does it..

There are options in Chrome that allow users to disable some of those tracking features - or  you can use the open source version of Chrome, called Chromium, which doesn't include all of the proprietary Google tracking stuff.
