Hey, everyone. I'm working on upgrading my 'bedroom' studio piece by piece. I'm currently on the lookout for a new hardware synthesizer. I essentially need:
*49 - 61 keys
*preferably both a pitch bend and modulation wheel
*touch-sensitive
*No more than $200 (I'll update periodically to see if this can be extended)

I want to have a pretty decent starter -keyboard- that can be used both stand-alone (messing around or performing live), or in-studio. Therefore, I am straying away from boards that rely heavily on an external synthesizer.

I am taking a look at various keyboard/synths, especially the M-Audio Venom. I have also taken a good look at controllers like the KeyRig 49. Once again, I'm looking to spend maybe $100 or $200, as I'm only a bedroom-producer who is moving along piece-by-piece.

I would suggest increasing your budget to start with if you want something decent.

Alrighty... hypothetically, let's suggest I DID increase it by an unknown amount. How much would I need to add, and what benefits come with increasing by so much?

Visit the Sam Ash and Guitar Center's near you. 

I have seen keyboards from under $100 to several thousand.... of course to get a decent keyboard I would expect to start in the $500 range... look for sales and discount coupons from the big box stores and apply them. 

To get something to input midi.... the cheapest one that has the correct number of keys will work.... I have see some 61 key models under $100.

That price on the Venom at Amazon looks like one of those small windows of opportunity that pop up from time to time.
If that unit appeals to you, snag it now. The window will close very quickly. The Venom has apparently been discontinued, and you may not get another chance.
If I had $200 to play with right now, I would be very tempted.

That said, I chose to go with a solid controller a few years back. My Edirol PCR-M50(No longer available)has served me well for several years. The Cakewalk/Roland A-Pro 500 is a descendant of that unit.
I have also built up a collection of soft synths that ca be played with the controller. Versatility beyond huge.
I record my synth tracks live, but in the confines of my bedroom studio environment.
This works well for my personal scenario, and playing live gigs is not really a consideration for me.

If I were in your shoes, I would:
1. Grab the Venom. This is too cool of a unit to pass up.
2. Plan on getting the Keyrig or a comparable unit in the future.
3. Start investing in good soft synths. Watch the Software Form. The guys there post notices on killer deals all the time. If you see an interesting group buy, get in on it.
4. Keep it fun, and don't forget to buy your significant other a box of chocolates.
