No offense to Ola Englund (can play circles around me)... but this test (IMO) was not done well.
It's obvious which product he's more familiar with... and spent more time with

There's a young guy (can't remember his name) who's a Fractal user.  His comparison videos on YouTube are (IMO) much better planned/executed... and thus more substantive.

I've owned all of them (Kemper, Axe-FX XL II+, AX8, and Helix)... and I can say with certainty that (with just the slightest effort), the Helix can sound FAR better than demonstrated there.  FWIW...

Here's an example of a higher gain sound from Helix (PRS Archon model):

Agreed, indistinguishable (at least on an iPad 😉)

That's all I'm saying.  Ola was trying to make them all sound the same and tweaked each until they did.  I'm sure, like Jim says, you could make any one of them sound "different" if not "better"...whatever that would mean... if you tried.  The fact that Ola could make all of the emulators he used sound...at least to those folks willing to admit it...indistinguishable to the so called "real" amp is a testament to how good the new tech is and how hollow the litany of "I can easily tell the real amp from the software amp" rings.  Just sayin.

PS:  I went and listened to that high gain example Jim posted.  Well, I tried to.  For a minute or so.  But it scared the pee-diddle outta me and I had to click to a puppy video to calm me down;-)

That stuff isn't my thing either...
But the Archon is in the same ilk as the MESA Triple Rec...

If you want to tell how good an amp sim sounds, high gain tones are the worst. The compression and distortion masks all the little differences. If I have to work on a high gain amp I never tell the owner to upgrade the tubes because they are simply throwing money away. Tung Sol power tubes and the cheapest Chinese pre amp tubes give 99% of the high gain crowd everything they want. NOS is just a waste.

I haven't worked with any of the new gen of modellers. When Line 6 arrived I bought their biggest flag ship amp, a big 2x12 combo. It always sounded great until you had people over. For some reason it just disappeared in the room and I couldn't hear it. I'm assuming they're much better now. Those Kemper amps look nice. I could model just about all the classic amps from my circle of friends, but I just can't pull the trigger because of my Line 6 experiences.

I didn't listen to the clip, but...
The Amplifire, Helix, and AX8 are all great. I'm not sure how they will be able to make big differences in the future.
I also think Amplitube, S-Gear, and Revalver can hold there own with the big hardware modelers.
None of them sound as good as a real amp in a room, but for recording I prefer a good modeler.
I've owned all that I have mentioned, and currently I use the AX8.
