So I dun messed up. I was about to clean up some of the million and half takes I did of my two input bass parts and thought I could use the "Group Only Clips In Folders" option in the preferences menu AFTER tracking. Nope. You have to set it before you start tracking. Now I'll either have to create the groups manually OR use Ctrl + select on each clip OR double edit.

I actually did know this a few months back when I gave myself a little crash course in the new Comping mode but hadn't really done much since so I forgot. D'oh!

Anyway... just a friendly reminder to not be a Beeping Beep and perhaps give you all a chuckle. ;-p

PS: I don't think Cake could do anything to make automatic retroactive multi track editing like this possible unless perhaps they coded the program to remember what takes were recorded at the same time then allow those clips to be grouped after recording... which would be nice... but I'm not requesting that. I'll just have to try to be smarter. lol

Yanno... I just realized how brilliant this Group By Folders thing really is for recording a full band, not just something like drums.

If it works the way I think it does then you could set up a folder for each instruments multi inputs. Like a folder for drums (obviously) then one for your bass DI and mic'd bass (or multi out amp like I have), multi mic's guitar amps/acoustic guitars, etc... Then every single bloody thing is pre grouped by instrument for the whole band for fast Comping/general editing.

Crazy!!

I use folders for everything. My general breakdown is drums, guitars, synths (pads and leads), keys. I've even been know to do one for bass with only one DI mono input...nothing like consistency. LOL

Sorry about your late realization above, man I hate that "I could've had a V8!" feeling.

Hi, Mike. I've used folders for everything as soon as I switched to Sonar. Makes things super clean and organized which is WAY better than the mess I used to have to deal with. However I'm referring to the clip grouping options for editing. I'm recording into folders anyway because of the multi input stuff so being able to have those takes automatically grouped is awesome. I really didn't bother with manual grouping before because I thought it was more bother than just multi selecting but if Sonar is gonna do it for me on input well that's just awesome.

Just wish I had remembered to set it before I started going nuts with the tracking. lol

I do however see a thread from October where a fellow was having a hard time with this feature putting takes/clips in the wrong groups and he had to renumber them. I'll have to test that out but I'm assuming even if that was a persistent problem it has been fixed with new patches.

Cheers.

Consider updating to X3e, work was done on comping with grouped tracks.

Honestly, I would think the creation date/time of a file should be its recording time. So I don't really see why retroactive grouping shouldn't be possible with a simple dialog.

Hi, Steve. Good to see you. It's on my list of things to do now that other nonsense has simmered down a bit. I've decided against the full system reinstall because things are working now with X3. Just have to delete a bunch of crap, do some backups and updates and rearrange my audio/project file structure. Really though I have not had ANY significant issues on X3c which is why I haven't really made patching a priority yet but this would certainly be something that would bump it up the list so thanks for the heads up. After hearing how everyone is making out with things in general I'm not nearly as hesitant to patch as I used to be and now I know how to quickly revert back if I do encounter issues.

Hope you've been well. Cheers.

Indeed but it's an extra piece of code and the Baker's seem to be on a roll lately with much more impressive additions. Kind of more of a failsafe feature for guys like me who tend to forget stuff.

Still it would be nice. Maybe in X4. Cheers.

Sorry about that Beepster. Note to self: minimum two cups of coffee before posting in the AM.

+1 for working smarter, but in my case I usually make an exception and just work longer..:)

at least you can manually group them after the fact for comping, which certainly did save me once.
