How do you keep from burning your fingers?

Cut them off?

No matter how far we go, there's always a limit beyond which is an unknown and we assume it's discoverable.

Why?

Oh Steve, you're so  cheeky.  You're hounding me, no?  If you really want a good argument, read Pascal.

Or, better yet, go program in Pascal!

The only thing worse than Pascal as a programming lang is LISP.  I never could get my procedural head around that one.

I'm a C/C++ dinosaur.  I leave such business to the point/click youngsters.

If it can be conceived, it will be achieved. That's just the facts, Jack.

LISP bashing?  Aw, what's the matter Bob?  Do you hate parentheses?

My coding actually predates C.  I started on an HP-2000 using BASIC, but I helped port the game ADVENT from B and also coded in Assembler, PL/I and Fortran (the precursors to C).  I really didn't start coding in C until the mid-80's.

But to get this topic back on track, we certainly didn't imagine 6 TB hard drives for under $200!  (Just saw an ad for a Toshiba at $199.)  Heck, I still remember paying $520 for a 10 MB hard drive that I didn't think I would be able to fill...  I think the future will include storing data on crystals (hey, maybe we can finally read what the Atlanteans stored on all those crystals people claim to have!).

No, I'm not hounding you - I just thought your blanket statement deserved some sort of explanation or justification.

I hear ya' ... I started by pushing pushbutton indicators bit by bit (UNIVAC) ... I dabbled with Berkeley p-code, COBOL and proprietary Honeywell (DPS6).  A few HP BASIC tools, but really got serious with C becoming widespread.  First exposure was a PDP-11, but quickly moved to the early desktops with CP/M & C and Sun.  C++ was the greatest to me.  The perfect blend in those environments.  Pyramid MIS series with dual universe kernels is still my favorite.  Something sublime about mixing SVR3.2 and BSD libs (mainly for stream/socket support prior to SVR4).  Dam% that was a long time ago.

I remember Tandy 5M large format HDs going for better than a grand.  My first HD was a 10M mfm Seagate that went into a Kaypro 16 luggable.  It was a great feeling knowing that I would never again run out of disk space!

I have 3 Toshiba ACA300 3T drives I've been using for a few months.  Great performers, no troubles.  These are readily available for less than $100.  My head is still stuck on wanting more smaller drives than fewer large drives.  I keep a 3T in the dock and run constant incrementals daily with Reflect for about month, then cycle another one in.  I may move the 3Ts internal and go with 6T for backups at some point.  I still haven't found an archive solution I fully trust.
