Hello All,
I am new to Sonar X3, with only very little experience with DAW's, if I have posted in the wrong area please let me know. I am trying to troubleshoot an issue with the clock in the audio engine. What is happening is that once I begin recording via midi and soft synth (actually anolog instruments as well, but  not as much of an issue), the recording stops at seven-tenths of a second and will only record that time frame, as well as playback for that time frame. At first I thought it was issue with my controller, but I experience the same issue when programming the piano roll as well (occurs with session drummer as well). I do have the same situation when recording instruments through my interface, the clock stops at seven-tenths, but in this case it continues recording until I stop and plays back the entire recording. I have spent the last few days researching and can only come up with a possibile issue with antivirus conflictions. Has anybody experienced this before?

Any help is much appreciated!

Joebay, do you have either looping or punch in/out enabled by mistake? Both of those modules should be showing in the control bar. If not, right clik on some empty space in the control bar to bring up the module selection list, select either or both of those to display in the control bar. I realize this is very basic, but sometimes that's where we must start, just like the old tv repairman question- "Is it plugged in?"
Best,
HeyDan

Scook asked you in the other forum to post your system specs and what audio interface etc. This helps everyone figure out where your at, other wise your going to get wild guesses.

Do you have the latest asio drivers for your audio interface will be my shot in the dark.

Did you run the DPCLAT test to check your machine is capable of audio streaming?

Hey there all,
I apologize for not posting the needed info, here it is:
OS: Windows 8.1 64 bit
Processor: Intel i-5
Interface: First gen DD Mbox 2 mini (old but it was laying around)
Sample rate: 44100
Mixing Latency: It is set at fast, with no ability to move the slider.
Buffer size is set at 256.

I did use the latency tool and it let me know that my system is capable of streaming audio without dropouts. I checked punch in/out options and they were not activated.

I will also check on drivers asap

The first part of my post here is regarding your above post about your system specs and latency checking, and not actually about your reported issue - thanks for bearing with me.

I am a bit confused.  You indicated you ran DPC Latency Checker, but DPC Latency Checker does not report times properly in Windows 8 or 8.1, and according to their site if it is run on a Windows 8/8.1 OS that it will indicate a problem.

Here is the relevant content from the web site on the issue:

"Windows 8 Compatibility: The DPC latency utility runs on Windows 8 but does not show correct values. The output suggests that the Windows 8 kernel performs badly and introduces a constant latency of one millisecond, which is not the case in practice."

I recommend you download and run LatencyMon instead.  The link for downloading that is:

http://www.resplendence.com/latencymon

Download and run the above for 4-5 minutes, with Sonar not running, to get an idea of how well the system can handle streaming audio applications, such as Sonar.

And, you will likely end up with lots of posts, which is great, but to help avoid folks having to keep asking for your system specs, I encourage you to edit your Forum Profile's Signature, and add your system specs to that, and when doing so also check the box that tells the forum software to always include your signature with your posts.  That way we will always have an instant understanding of the system you are running Sonar on.

You can look at the bottom of this post for an idea of what to list and how, or look at some others who have their specs listed, for examples.

I am a bit curious on what Driver Mode you are using in Sonar (ASIO or WDM), and also I would like to know your Total Roundtrip Latency, as reported in Sonar.  Driver Mode can be seen by going in Sonar to: Edit>Preferences>Audio>Playback and Recording, and Total Roundtrip Latency is found at: Preferences>Audio>Driver Settings.

-------------------------------------------------

OK - now on to the issue you reported with the recording stopping after only a very brief time.

I understand the first part of your post, that when recording either by using your instruments or by using Piano Roll View, that the recording stops after only advancing a very small amount.

Then I get REALLY confused, by something you indicated later in that first post.  Here is your text that confuses me: "I do have the same situation when recording instruments through my interface, the clock stops at seven-tenths, but in this case it continues recording until I stop and plays back the entire recording."

Can you please explain that again for me?  You seem to be saying that it DOES continue to recording, and then it plays back, but your post is about it NOT continuing to record, so I am not understanding what exactly is happening.  So, please take another stab at explaining what is happening.

I am not trying to be difficult - I am just trying to understand the situation, so that I can help you figure out how to fix your issues.  :)

Perhaps you could detail the project - what is in it, tracks, instruments, external gear, etc, AND also detail the steps you are doing when you are recording and the problems are happening.

Thanks - sorry if I am dense.

The only things I can think of, off the top of my head, are weird things like either some sort of clock setting issue with external gear, OR maybe something like a resource conflict between Sonar and either Windows or some other application both trying to grab the audio interface.

SO, in addition to the other information I asked you above to post:

1.   What is your current Windows Default Audio Device set to?  (Your interface?  On-Board Sound?)
2.  Are any other applications running at the same time you are running Sonar?
3.  In Sonar Edit>Preferences>Audio>Playback and Recording, do you have the box checked or unchecked for: Share Drivers With Other Programs?

Thanks - please DO post all the requested information, and I will try to help you get this figured out.

Hey there Bob and thanks for the response,

No worries with the misunderstanding of my initial post, as It is hard for me to articulate exactly what is happening. Ill break it down a bit:
- When recording with soft synths or with a midi controller, the audio engine stops at seven-tenths of a  second. It does not record any further than that mark. I have this problem with all vst's. It does not return audio data.
-when recording instruments through the interface, the engine clock stops at 7/10ths, just as it does in the previous scenario, but in this case (when using instruments through my interface), it continues to record. It will not return audio data until the recording is stopped. This is where it get's confusing.

In a nutshell:
The audio engine stops at 7/10ths of a second in both situations. When using midi and soft synths, it will only record for that portion, when using the interface with instruments, the only difference is that it will record until I say stop. Midi/soft synth essentially do not record, instruments do record, both stop at 7/10ths of a second.

1. My windows default device is set to an Asus Xonar audio card (used for other purposes).
2. Concerning any applications, there is nothing invasive running, or anything really for that matter.
3. I do not have "share drivers with other programs" checked.

UPDATE: I have found that it is probably my driver for the mbox, as it is a legacy driver and may not have support on a W8.1 system. I will have to double check it. I found this from simply unplugging the interface and BAM!, the clock works and everything is great! However I need to find a cheap and decent interface if I cant find a suitable driver.....

Also, I ran latencymon, and it gave me the message that I am capable of audio stream without dropouts.

Actually, as I am having issues with the driver it seems, any suggestions for a 1st gen mbox 2 mini?

Yes once you posted your audio interface I went to the Avid web site and see that it is not supported anymore, Time for a new interface and problem solved.

Thank you, you have been a great resource! This is great news, as I am absolutley fine with getting a new interface. Any suggestions? I am mainly tracking guitars, something simple, and would prefer access to XLR if needed. Any suggestions appreciate. Ill update my profile as well.
