For me, the patch is crucial for MIDI guitar to work correctly. I always set each string to its own channel, so that the target voice can be set to monophonic. That way it feels and plays more like a real guitar, which can play only one note per string.

Rapture is great for MIDI guitar...six elements each on their own channel, with the option of one note per element.

Craig,
sure,  I would definitely have to say your approach is the correct approach
that little blurb I posted about using the one channel thing w a fast patch was more or less a quick way for someone
who has an older hardware midi guitar (that has probably sat in the closet for years )  to get a quick feel for working with the latency and what ever little guitar playing techs they might have to raise their playing level up to...

OT ,
I have been working a lot in my spare time working with your SONAR X1 Advanced Worksop Video's ..
it has become very clear to me ..that I have been doing things in SONAR  the hard way for years
great info  you teach ………

That's why I abandoned all my old work flow when I adapted X1 Kenny. And it still took me till now to really get the jist of a new work flow.

But I have to say it's much better than ever. I can really move around now.

Looked at Jam Midi Guitar. Might have to try this. I wanna work with Melodyne first and see if I need more.

Just the other day I took some open guitar strumming and converted to midi and had piano and violin, cellos and flutes backing in no time!! This is opening up all kinds of ideas for me that are not possible before X3.

sorry guys for going OT on the midi thing

Hi Grem ,

thank you for sharing that , I'm glad you made it through the transition

in my case, I'm gonna have to admit this and let the chips fall where they fall…..
the jump from S...6 to X3 has me overwhelmed …..
on one hand,I can see and hear that X 3 is a Galaxy unto itself …absolutely fantastic (even the hidden from me) potential ….
I often feel like the dude that got locked in The Bumblebee Tuna factory who starved to death because he didn't know how to use a can opener  ……..
on the other hand , I really don't want to use S 6 anymore ,  I'm just caught between a big learning curve ….
when I mentioned Craigs videos , it sort of sealed the deal for me as far as having to step up and learn a new way
of doing things….
one nice thing about learning the new ways of doing things …there is a payoff in increased productivity ...
I owe it to myself to put in the time in the S...X woodshed
it's time to pay some dues …I'm teachable

That's the spirit! It took much longer than I anticipated. But was well worth it.

But to go from S6 to X3!! Wow!! That's quite a curve. Karl's SWA videos are also good, as are Craig's and Groove3.

@Craig: wanting to try Rapture with midi and use all six elements. I was going to hold off on Jam midi but I am definitely very curious!! To play it in real time is very tempting!!

Download the demo. It is free, but it may well make you want to buy it.

Pop back to tell us what you think.

I was really impressed.  I don't work for the company, but am starting to think I should be getting royalties.

Downloaded the demo of the Midi Guitar. Had to patch my midi out back to midi in to record it but it worked. The demo added a low C note ?? But I erased it.  Real bad latency at first until I  set my Scarlett mix control down to a dangerous 2ms. Still a bit of latency but that's my computer I guess.

It tracked a little worse than my GR 50 with lots of glitches and false triggers,  but was not bad as far as software goes. You must remember that the GR Synths don't even use midi , the guitar drives the synth directly.  The midi output added latency compaired to the on board sound.  And you can set the sensitivity for each string which is super important. I guess if you had adjustable poles on you PU it would do the same here.

Low note will always track slower because it takes a little longer for the wave to be analyzed. That is why Bass Guitar synths were a failure. The one that worked Peavey? had some kind of special frets and was not pitch to data.

Any how try the demo and see what you think, It cuts out at random so you won't get much done until you buy it.

And yes there is the stand alone unit and a  dll  32 or 64 bit you drop into Sonars VST folder.
I first inserted it into an audio track EFX bin and it worked with it's built in sounds ( they suck) but I couldn't figure out how to set the midi output.
I then used the stand alone and set the midi output to my Scarlett, patched a jumper out to in,  then armed a track in Sonar with the Scarlett midi input and output to TTS-1.

I may not be using Melodyne to its full potential, but have not seen any pitch/modulation wheel info created with an "audio to MIDI" conversion. Can this be done?

I do remember after reading Kenny's post that the lower strings were "flaky" using the GR-30, but I have not gotten this out again yet to try it. Since the processor correlates bends, I am assuming that a MIDI out of the GR-30 would send those to SONAR, but do not "know" yet.

I guess the feature I am most interested in is being able to capture MIDI with the pitch/modulation, especially if recorded via a guitar.

Pitch Bend Data for midi conversion in Melodyne, is part of Melodyne Studio, not Editor or Essential, unfortunately.

Well,
I did the upgrade to Editor, and the results are just fine,if a little taxing on this 3 year old Dell, though I'm pleased as I really can't play keyboards,no matter how much I thought I could.

Dimension Pro is now really amazing me,even though I've had it since early X1!

I really didn't want to have to go the MIDI guitar"pickup"route, especially being left handed, though I don't have a clue wether turning the pickup the other way would even work?

So problem solved, now about the music.....
cheers
Bob
