  • How's everyone getting on with the Nomad plugs? (p.2)

I should of mentioned it earlier. When I said a level shift of 3 dB I meant level over the whole freq range. I agree it does add any boost anywhere specific from what I can tell, just an overall level shift which sort makes it sound better!  But I do hear the sound of that plugin even with all the eq controls set for no boost or cut anywhere there is still a sweet sort of Pultec sound which just can in mastering be put over the mix.

I have mastered with it many times.  Just mastered a Jazz album.  Very high quality mixes.  As soon as I put the Pultec over the mix it just changes for the nicer. I had to pull out some 300 mud and push gently around 1.5K to 3K to just nudge the upper mids forward.  The  mix was very bright too in the upper 10 K and above and the Pultec did a marvelous job of just pulling that excessive top end down too.  EQ's sound nice in cut mode.

This is the Pultec I am also referring, the full version. I don't think it is in the bundled Nomad Sonar plugins. It is worth having though.

When I am making broad brush strokes like this the Pultec is very cool.  When some precision eq is needed I use the LP64 EQ first followed by the Pultec and just do the surgical bit using the LP64 EQ.  The LP64 EQ is super transparent and does not alter the sound of the mix.  (apart from the surgical correction)  Having the Pultec after it means it is handling a corrected sound and then adding its thing.

What you can do with that plugin too is attenuate and boost around the same frequencies.  You may think one cancels the other out and it does to a certain extent but not completely so it also creates some slightly odd shapes in the EQ around theose frequencies which can make things sound a little more interesting too.

dontcrack.com had a recent sell on all of the Nomad stuff at %75 off. I'm really digging Cosmos and Magnetic II. I'm still in the experimenting stage with most of the bundles, but none of the plugins sound like junk. I do have some UAD stuff with a quad card and a duo sat., but I find I'm using them much less now that I have the prochannel and the Nomad stuff.

I love the Nomad stuff. I got the total bundle on a sale a few years ago. Some of the best money I spent on plugs.

I love the chorus. It just has so many options that it's unbelievably useful.

I have been swapping out with TRacks Brickwall and Nomads brick wall on the master during tracking and I am liking the Nomad better.

Yeah I bought Cosmos and Magnetic II in a sale not so long back. They're excellent plugins.

The Nomad stuff does add a different flavor to the "clean" Sonitus etc.  It is great to have, and the time-based effects are very nice indeed.  If you don't like them - don't use them.  No one says you have to.

I didn't think I needed them and I guess technically I may not BUT as I said in the Feature Request thread the Brickwall is far superior to the Boost11 for my needs and I'm quite happy the Pultec was inculded so I could try out some mixing recipes. Haven't really tried the other stuff but those two have made me want to see exactly what these things can do. The Sonitus stuff seems very surgical to me and I know they can pretty much do whatever needs to be done because of that but as someone who's used to manipulating actual knobs and dials and having things molded for me by hardware in their own special way I'm thinking the BT stuff is gonna creep it's way onto a lot of my stuff.

The only downside is I kind of want to learn the hyper surgical way of doing things like looking at the numbers and typing in values to make things happen. If I have fancy looking knobs that do sweet things I may slack off a little. But hey... I guess in the long run I just want things to sound good so what the heck. Not like I've had a ton of time to nerd out and get all sciency on things lately anyway.

Also... hi, Sharke.

Thanks. Been dealing with some absolutely ridiculous nonsense in regards to the new place so haven't had much time for tunage. I'm REALLY disappointed after all I went through to get here. Taking a week off from all that because I think I've done all I can for now so I've been trying to get my brain shifted back to music a little. Just hoping it all works out and I can get back to work. Hope you've been well.

Cheers.

I opened the Chorus plug just for the first time..and it looked like a Strymon on steroids.  Sounded great for a chorus and another reason that I'm glad I'm not installing a zillion plugs in my new DAW.
