Hi guys, and sorry I couldn't be more informative with the thread title.
 
Does anyone know if it's possible to assign two different keyboard shortcuts to split an audio track in two different ways.
 
To explain, I have X3 set up so that when I split a track with the S key, the right hand part of the clip is highlighted.
 
However, sometimes I'd rather the left hand portion became highlighted after a split.
 
Therefore, is it possible to assign one shortcut to split and highlight the right part, and another shortcut to highlight the left part?
 
My practical use for this is for example when I'm tidying up guitar fills, and I want to quickly split each clip at either end to mute the unwanted string noise etc:
 

 
I've used automation before, but with only one or two clips on each track, it's often much quicker to use the split + mute technique described above.

Use a modifier key?

IOW shift, ctrl, or Alt + s. That way you press s for the right side highlight and one of those keys +s to highlight the left.

I was meaning to use key binding a modifier key.

I can assign any key or key combination to perform a split, but the only way I can find to choose which part (or not) becomes highlighted is globally in Preferences>Editing.

I typically just highlight by selecting the unwanted stuff and just hit delete. No need to worry about muting then and since it is non-destructive if you decide it is not what you wanted to do just catch the edge of the clip and drag what you deleted back in.

I just slip edit the clips. Doesn't seem any longer a process than what you are trying to do.

Once I got home (at work when I gave suggestion) I took a look and sure enough. I thought about that too while at work.
 
Maybe a feature request? Or maybe Craig has some type of work flow that may help[. He does a lot of splitting and trimming of clips for sample stuff. Maybe he's on to something.

Indeed I do! Don't use split.
 
1. Drag across the section to the left of what you want to keep, then hit the Del key.
2. Drag across the section to the right of what you want to keep, then hit the Del key.
 
What remains is what you want to keep.
 

It would be nice to set up the split tool as you are wanting but I don't think it's currently possible.
 
Perhaps they could add a feature to the "Split" dialog like this:
1. Highlight area you want to keep
2. Right click and select "Split"
3. Select "Crop to selection" (retaining the hidden areas)
-or-
3. Select "Crop to selection and bounce" (permanently deleting the unwanted areas)
 
Or they could add 2 new items to the Right Click menu:
1. Highlight area you want to keep
2. Right click and select "Split to selection" (retaining the hidden areas)
-or-
2. Right click and select "Bounce to selection" (permanently deleting the unwanted areas)
 
A feature request would be needed for these.

I don't think the issue is about an enhanced split function, it's about being able to delete material on two sides of the part you want to keep. So I think deletion is probably a quicker path to that goal then selecting, splitting, and deleting.
 
However, a "Crop to Selection" option would be even faster than what I proposed--just drag over what you want to keep, and hit akeyboard shortcut for "crop to selection."
