Hi all,

(I apologize I posted this in the wrong area before which it should have been in the X2 area) As some of you know I did a lot of development on Pro Audio/Sonar over the years. I did move to a Mac Pro last year but still wanted access to a huge library of original music I created on the PC.   Sonar X2 works great under vmware fusion 5, but still need windows 8.    Now Im also in the process of taking this a step further for Rain and other Mac Sonar users! Within OSX we have something called "wineskin". This allows us to natively run PC programs and turn them into .apps. The great thing here is its all self contained, without the need for windows, vmware, bootcamp or parallels (Its also not a emulator since both are using a x86 x64 instruction set)!

Lets say something got fouled up for example in a upgrade, just keep a backup of the SonarX2.app handy and walla you are back up and running beautifully. No re installs, no hassles, no fixing.

Here is a video I did showing mIRC (PC only) in OSX.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MYEU6D6BvAE&feature=plcp  I just started the process creating and setting this up, so Ill be working on getting Sonar X2 into a native Mac .app file and keep you posted. Ill update with some videos in the near future.

Thanks all hope you guys are doing well!

Best regards,

Scott,
This looks really cool.  I'm very seriously thinking about moving to a Mac sometime next year and would love a way to port over Sonar and all of the PC based plug-ins I've accumulated and invested in over the years.  This method of running Sonar on a Mac without having to use Bootcamp or Parallels will make the decision to move that much easier.

Love it! I've been hoping that Cakewalk would release a Mac version of X2, but doubted it would ever happen. Man, I'd love to run Sonar on my Mac. I currently use Parallels to run X1 just to export my old projects and pull them into Logic. While I love working in Logic, I do miss Sonar at times, but there's no way I'm going back to Windows now.

This could be the answer. Thanks for posting.

I've had a wonderful experience with wineskin. Nearly every PC program I needed is now a native app and runs full speed. best of all its free. Once I get this all up and running Ill put up some videos so you can see. VMware works as you see from my screenshot, but I like everything native and not having to use bootcamp is a huge plus.

If something needs a bit more then just an install you can just checkbox different .dll

Usually you just click install software  then point to the exe and your done!  Admittedly some software is finicky and requires about more adjustments, or other software installed. The brilliant thing again here is, its all in a single file. so its a programs without windows existing within  a file.

Im excited, have a ton of old projects I'd love to hear again!

Ya it would be nice if cakewalk did this right? Arenanet the maker of guildwars2 (I work in the video game industry tv and film), a MMO PC just rerelease a Mac client which is just a wineskin/ciderx .app  THis seems to be the trend lately.

if this works like wine on linux i would be surprised if it works well. However by all means keep working as i would be happy to be proven wrong.

Hey guys,

I'm also interested in how this turns out. I do love my Macbook Pro for everyday use but I'm doing the opposite with my music PC. Running OSX on it. Building a Hackintosh actually ain't that hard these days ...

That said, I'm spending much more time in Windows 8. SONAR X2 is to me a much better program than Logic 9.

I do understand the difference here, not having to reboot and all, but I'm not sure if that actually is such a big thing for me.

Not really sure what the purpose of this rant was?
Guess I just wanted to say: Keep up the good work and keep us posted!

Best Regards
Ludvig

This is really interesting.

Can I just ask how external plugins work - are you using the Mac native versions, or do you install the PC versions?
In particular, things like the Pro Channel modules are also PC executables - can they work via wineskin?

Cheers
James
