• SONAR
  • Mac OSX - Sonar X2. Working on making it a native .app (p.6)

Update - I bought a MacBook Pro retina and I love it.  I installed vmware Fusion6 with both win7 and win8. I didn't install Bootcamp yet. I've installed Sonar X3 and all my plugins into Fusion6 win7.  I copied over all my Sonar projects.  Here is the progress so far:

Plugins:  The only plugin that doesn't work is East West Play (tried both 3 and 4) - they both crash Sonar.  All my other plugins work fine.  Trilian, Superior, PodFarm2.5, Ozone4, Dimension and all the Sonar plugins seem to work perfectly.

Latency:  I'm experiencing poor latency when using a midi keyboard to trigger a soft synth.  I installed ASIO4ALL to help, but no improvement.  Probably about 60ms latency despite reported buffer size.

Audio Devices:  The internal MacBook Pro audio works fine (the speakers in the MBP are better than any laptop speakers I've ever heard)  PODX3 doesn't work at all - just a bunch of noise.  Unfortunately I really need Line6 audio devices (PODX3 and UX2) to work.

Summary:  3 big issues to overcome:  1-Play doesn't work, 2-PODX3 doesn't work, 3-Latency.

I will try Boot camp - hopefully this will give me better results.

ps - I've been trying out Logic.  Pretty cool software.  Although some weird stuff to get used to coming from Sonar.  I really want to be able to run Sonar on this mac.

Would be the coolest to get Sonar working as a Wineskin app.  I hope Scott is successful.

Bumping, very interested in Scott's solution coming through:)

Brad, would you be so kind as to highlight your work flow for running Sonar in Parallels and pulling old projects into Logic?  You can't just copy/paste per se can you?  I've got Sonar on Parallels myself (but obviously no pro audio interface support), and would like to do the same.  Thanks!

Hey All,
I'm really hoping this concept, and thread stays alive,Iv'e only used computers since my join date, but after buying my mother anew dell inspiron, that was "only available" with W8....I absolutely hate W8[even with "classic shell"],I'm now looking to buy a W7 disc for it,as the metro interfAce "without" a touch screen for an 80 year old woman whom, although is still very sharp, has been next to impossible to teach.... a total disaster,of what was mean't to be a decent gift!

Anyway I mostly work on my XPS L502x laptop, but it's already getting very tired and lately even with a nice sounding VS-100 interface, the laptop just doesn't have the juice[i7 2630qm] to run the ASIO buffer at any less than maximum,so the "bad latency" with guitartrek is having is not enticing for my "mac mini" Haswell idea, and obviously I'm wanting to run Sonar X1,X2 and 3[own them all],I do have a desktop thats great[sig.] but it only fits in one end of the house, and it's stinking hot ATM[summer here-that part of the house has no insulation],and is more of an average single car garage turned into a spare room, also I like to work in my bed room, the thing is Iv'e always really wanted a mac,and with "Keni's" good fortune,it's certainly seems enticing.

As per usual the start price for the i5 mac mini in Oz is $749,as opposed to $599,like the US,anyway I do hope to read of more successes on this thread, while what I really should be doing is remodelling my tiny bedroom,to bring the still fairly powerfull overclocked 2600K in here, and spend the supposed mac money,on far far better monitoring.[I surely need it!]

It really just seems sensible to use one machine you can use BOTH OS's on,and apparently my 26k desktop has the correct ingredients for a Sandy Bridge Era"Tony Mac" Hackintosh-motherboard/videocard and all,but OSX discs in OZ,are like chickens with fangs!
They DON'T seem to EXIST!

Keep up the good work Scott
Sincerely
Bob

And then you look at the current status of the PC project, at the development costs in building a complex application from scratch,  which will need to be radically redesigned to cope with a new OS...

Anyways I understand the desire, keep on dreaming....

Ok - More progress -

First of all I am LOVING this MacBookPro.  16GB memory, 8 Cores, 1TB SSD drive.  This thing is a screamer!

I've got Sonar X3 installed and working extremely well in Bootcamp.  My only issue was EastWest Play - Play just won't work in Bootcamp.  I tested Play on another MacBookPro and it crashed too, so it isn't my computer.  As much as I like EastWest libraries, I'm not impressed with Play or their customer service.  I've bought Vienna Symphonic Libraries - great libraries, great player, and top notch customer service.

The thing I'm struggling with is Fusion6 and Sonar.  At the moment it is not working.  I've got 4 cores and 4GB allocated which is plenty, but it is having issues.  I've got some of my big libraries over on the Mac drive (D:) which works fine in Bootcamp, but with Fusion I have to remap this drive from Z: to D: which seems to cause problems. The loading of projects is maybe 3 times as long.  Also, I can't get a smooth playback even with really high buffer sizes.  And, it assigns a different computer ID, so Toontrack thinks it is a different computer and I'm maxed out at two computers for Toontrack.  So I have to use Bootcamp for Sonar for the time being.

I really, really like the Mac environment.  And I've been loving Logic.  While it is great that I can get Sonar to work on the MacBook for my old projects, I will probably be cutting over to Logic for new projects.  Things would be different if Scott came through with his wineskin version of Sonar, or they would develop Sonar for OSX.
