I'm close to pulling the trigger on a DAW upgrade and will most likely be adding a BabyFace. The Babyface only has optical for the digital I/O, which also doubles as the S/PDIF I/O. I know there's a couple of adapters out there which provide conversion of both input and output. ($100 - $150 range) I really only need the input conversion.

Anyway, there's some cheapo S/PDIF to Toslink adapters on the net for like $12.00 that I've come across. Are these any good? It's not like they're converting audio to digital, so on the surface they might be all that's required. Anyone have any experience using one?

The hardware's very simple. I'd have no problem taking a chance on a $12 box. The one I have here cost around $30, IIRC, from Parts Express. It worked just fine for several years, until I replaced the audio interface with one that has S/PDIF.

Thanks Bit...

Ya, I came across a schematic online. There doesn't seem to be much involved. Also uncovered an old thread on the RME site where one of the admins said the generic ones work fine.
