Great , I'm running Windows 8 64 bit on a lap top I just bought 5 months ago and now I get the privilege of getting strong armed into having to update ….or else loose all support from Microsoft
OK I can clearly see where I'm heading with this

Look, they said XP support was going to stop in 2008 or thereabouts then it was 2012, now it's 2015...truth be told the packages for XP SP3 will still be available probs in 2020!!

Jeez if you hunt hard enough I daresay even Windows 98 SPs are still somewhere (jmo )

People should not panic and you won't HAVE to upgrade to 8.1.1 for future upgrades to the W8 platform. This has a lot to do with Auto-Updating. Much the same as you can still get XP upgrades (up to when it stopped) but NOT via the Windows Update applet in Windows.

There is no reason to think that you can no longer upgrade from Windows 8.0 to Windows 8.1 via the usual upgrade path:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/update-from-windows-8-tutorial

After you have 8.1 installed, you should be able to install the 8.1 update (KB 2919355) via Windows Update:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/install-latest-update-windows-8-1

This is more confusing than it needs to be. The KB 2919355 update is just a required update for all future updates. There is nothing new or unusual about MS offering a windows update upon which at least some future updates are dependent. But in effect, if you are not going to install this update, you will not be able to install any other updates until you have installed this one.

And further, this is just some opinion piece (imo ) from someone who is probs deliberately misquoting to infer the greatest sense of panic and gravitas to the story.

If you are THAT concerned, rather than relying on silly opportunistic stories like this one, speak to the butcher and not the block - go to the source and ask MS yourself.

wrong or not it makes no difference to me any more at this point
my absolute preference has and always will be to keep my DAW off the net period unless I have to update my music software
what about that do you not understand ?

The way I understand this is that Windows 8.1 Upgrade (or 8.1.1 if you like) was a massive update, over a gigabyte of download data and just about every OS kernel file was altered. I don't know why so many changes were needed to support the desktop experience.

At any rate, one of these changes was to Windows Update itself. So to keep on using the newer updates you need to have the latest version of Windows update.

For such a massive change, I would expect it to be wise to keep up with where MS is going with Windows 8 or just play it safe and stay with Windows 7 for a while longer.

For the record, here is the complete list of system files that changed on my system after the last update:

How many of you do not update Windows? I do it all the time. In fact I update whenever there is an update. Its free and it often means a better OS. New features and better security. And bugs are fixed. I don't understand the reluctance to update. Nor do I get the dooms day response for not updating. When MS offers a service pact it follows that in order to keep current you need to install service packs. Windows 8.1 was a service pack and you cant update from 8 to 8.1.1 without it. What is so awful about that?

When I see things like the DISM change above, I am reminded of the way they may change future installs using a Windows image file in a locked partition and just make hard links to stuff in the image file.

I don't understand what is intended, maybe a decrease in footprint size for smaller devices, or maybe some security features.

Perhaps the Windows Update will just make image changes only?

If anyone has better info on these plans I'd like to read up on them
