This morning my Windows 8.1 machine was automatically updated.  I began to have bad problems with my quad capture.  When I clicked on an mp3, file, it would not play, and had some weird server error message.  Tried to play a wave in Sound Forge, and Sound Forge crashed.  Tried Sonar, and had no sound. Did a system restore, and everything is working fine.  Stopped automatic updates.  It looks like the quad capture needs a driver update. Just a heads up.

Had the same thing two days ago but with my Focusrite. Uninstalled the driver, re-installed, and it worked again, but was glitchy. It would work with Sonar, but not with Win Media Player, saying there was no interface. Re-boot, it would work with WMP, but then not in Sonar.

I will be home soon to try some advice. Apparently Win8 displays this behaviour sometimes with drivers if quick start up is enabled, which allows a boot up from semi-hybernation. I had disabled this, but the new update may have turned the feature back on again. There are also a few threads about 8.1, SSD's, and loss of drivers from this quick start ups. Anyway, will post here again if I can confirm this.

My laptop started acting really strange last night after an automatic Win7 update. It took me 15 minutes to get it started again and it seemed very slow and glitchy in everything it did. Lets hope it was just temporary.

Windows 8.1 CAN wreak havoc on some music applications, and some drivers that work fine in Windows 8 fail miserably in Windows 8.1, so I HIGHLY recommend anyone considering the jump to 8.1 first do their homework on what their software will do when faced with Windows 8.1, PRIOR to making the jump.

I am doing some final testing TODAY, and am likely making the permanent jump to Windows 8.1 this afternoon, but I did research every single application I run, to try to make sure (as sure as I can determine), that I won't have any nightmares once I make the move.

There is Windows 8.1 that needs new drivers and there is the 8.1 update or what some call 8.1.1. It does not need new drivers. If you are going from Windows 8 to 8.1 you will most likely need to update your drivers. If you are going to 8.1.1 the 8.1 drivers will work. Roland should have all the drivers you will need ready for updating.

Also this update to windows is mandatory if you wish to continue to keep you windows current. Without it windows will not update any more.

The new Win 8.1 Update (or Win 8.1.1) restores the Start Menu on the desktop, among other good programing.  The desktop is now on an equal footing with the Metro app interface.  Lots of good things for desktop users.

I'm sorry, John, but you are wrong.  I've been on 8.1 with the updated quad capture 8.1 drivers and everything has been working fine since it was updated to 8.1 in October. This happened yesterday with the new 8.1.1. update.  It happened, so please don't tell me I'm wrong.  When I restored everything was fine, so obviously Roland needs to look into this.  I'd rather be able to make music, than worry about if Window is current.  When and if new drivers come out I will consider updating windows.

Hope you get to the bottom of this! 8.1.1 cured some glitches I was having. Much smoother now with x3.

In general terms of upgrading, I think if one proceeds with doing some initial looking into driver availability and any reported issues, in advance of ANY operating system level advancement (Windows 7 to Windows 8, or Windows 8 to Windows 8.1, or someday Windows 10 to Windows 10.1), AND the whole system is backed up prior to actually performing the upgrade, that this approach is the safest way to do it, as it leaves a backup plan of recovering if unforeseen problems arise.

There DOES seem to be some software that does not like going from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1, so it is wise to proceed cautiously.  On the other hand, a lot of folks have had no trouble making that move.

Bob I had that problem with upgrading to 8.1 but a reinstall of the offending software cured the problem. Sound Forge 11 was the most problematic but its running well now and has been after I reinstalled it.
