well dave you made me go look it up. I was certain that I am using drivers newer than 2006 and I am.

http://www.m-audio.com/index.php?do=support&tab=driver&serie_ID=1&PID=ad13e577f5e5f494c721095cefefd71b&OS=72
that link is for XP SP3 which gives these drivers:
Delta 44 06/27/2008 5.10.00.5069v3 Delta_V32_5.10.00.5069v3.exe

or if you have XP SP2:
http://www.m-audio.com/index.php?do=support&tab=driver&serie_ID=1&PID=ad13e577f5e5f494c721095cefefd71b&OS=71
Delta 44 04/05/2007 5.10.00.5057v3 Delta_WDM_5.10.00.5057v3.exe

So he (and apparently you) do not have the latest drivers.

EDIT: That is to say, I was 99.99% certain!

OK. Now I've got the 5.10.0.5069 driver showing in my M-Audio\Delta folder and a new icon in the systray. However, running the install program takes me back to the earlier frustration where, during the install process, it can't find the driver, even when I tell it where the DLL files are located. And device manager still shows no sign of M-Audio - just "Other devices" with "Multimedia Audio Controller with a "?" over it.

Don't know if this will help, but I'm pretty sure M-Audio recommends installing the driver (from disc) before installing the PCI card.
Maybe see if you have any luck with that sequence.....

I'm getting to be quite an expert on uninstalling and installing the drivers. What you get when you run the installation program is a message that tells you the computer must be shut down, then the card installed and the computer restarted. I have tried it both that way and simply leaving the card in. I get the same result either way.

I think you've probably done just about everything you can without m-audio's help or a new card to try.

The eBay replacement Delta 44 card arrived and everything is working OK! Thanks to everyone who put their 2 cents in.

I have the exact same problem with my Delta 44 and then someone told me to try it in UBUNTU Studio and guess what, it works like a charm. So I don't know what happened with the card but it seems to be a problem with windows reading older cards, especially after a sp upgrade. Maybe I could be wrong but I'm glad I never threw the card away. The sad thing is that UBUNTU don't really have the stuff that I'm looking for, but on the brighter side the os is for free and so is all the software and even my M-Audio keyboard is plug and play without installing any drivers, but for now my recordings can go forward again. M-Audio was no help at all in this regard and even they told me that my card is faulty.
