  • MIDI Envelope NOT Working When Recording

WHY isn't my MIDI envelope (that I spent HOURS getting to sound right) working (taking effect) when I try to record/convert that MIDI track to an audio track?  It works great when I'm simply playing back the MIDI version, but as soon as I try to record it from my external keyboard, it records that fine, it just doesn't record the swell that I insert into the MIDI track.

BTW, X3 SUX at implementing the envelope feature, but I know that's a futile argument.  Just thought I'd vent.

When you say "record" are you using a hardware synth?  There's a longstanding bug that MIDI automation doesn't get processed when doing a real-time bounce of a soft synth , but there shouldn't be a problem with automation when recording hardware synths or doing a freeze or fast bounce of a soft synth.

Actually, I AM using a hardware synth.  It always worked BEFORE X3.

Double-checked my own setup; I'm not seeing a problem. What controller operating on what synth parameter?

Can you specify your question a little more?

What's the controller name/number that the envelope is generating, and if it's not something generic like Modulation or Expression, what's it controlling on the synth?

I posted the same question on the Alesis forum to verify I have all those settings correct.

Well, all I can tell you is that the functionality works in general, and I run several different hardware synth, including an Alesis QSR, so I don't really can't think what to suggest without more detail about the setup.

What if you just record something with sustain pedal and convert the sustain controllers (CC64) to an envelope (Clips > Convert MIDI Controllers to Envelopes)? Does that record correctly?

I'm trying to affect Cntrlr 7 in all instances (MIDI channels).  Haven't heard anything from Alesis yet.

If you can get the Alesis I/O to do loopback recording, you can just
play the track and loop the audio output back in to an audio track.
You'll have some lag in the recording you'll need to nudge a bit.
Otherwise the only way around the bug I know of is to assign your
envelope to midi channel 1.
