I am looking for unexpensive monitors. I mix music in the headphones, and it has been 10 years since I used any monitors. It means that I can live without them, but I want to have something to check if my mix sounds ok, and play music for the friends... I am looking at PreSonus Eris E5, they sale them at $250 for pair plus free cables, vibration pads and volume controller (not sure how that works). I am wondering if JBLs and KRK Rokit 5 are much better- they are $150 each. Also I have Presonus StudioLive 24 mixer, and felt as Presonus monitors would match sonically better with their own brand mixer. Also- I do not like KRK yellow center. My room is blue and Presonus has blue center... Please, let me know if you think or know- they are awful, so I dont make a mistake. Thank you.

Hi, Vlada.

The term 'color' of a sound is just an expression, so pink, yellow, blue, whatever :)  - kidding

There is no bet that the Presonus monitors would be the best 'match' just because they come from the same vendor.

Do you have any Guitar Center, or other pro audio music store near you?  Perhaps you could listen to several pairs and choose what you think works best.

I use the KRK 8's, and they suit my needs.

I 'Liked' your entry song, by the way, not because you asked us to, but because I thought it was incredibly creative.  REALLY nice tune.

Thank you for your replies. Yeah, JBLs were under the consideration. I liked Presonus deal because it comes with the mats, cables and this volume controller. http://www.americanmusical.com/Item--i-SMA-ACTPACK-LIST and all this for $250... But then I am thinking- I do not know if this gigantic knob is any good, and I would still need 2 cables to go from knob to monitors... But I do like idea that I will not have to get up. My mixer is not near me and it kind of hard to get to it, and checking sound at different levels- I need to be in front of monitors and have access to the level.

Bob, what you mean by "no bet'? Is it a good match or it does not matter? I like KRKs, but man- that designer that came up with the yellow center would be so fired! I understand that it is about the sound. But if you use monitors once a week for an hour, the rest of time it is a furniture and those 2 ugly circles are visible from across the room.

By the way, Bob, did you actually "Vote" for me or only "Liked" a page? I am realizing, I wrote, "You have to Like the page to vote", and many people may think if they "Like" the page- it is the vote. There is big red button under the rank to Vote. http://bit.ly/OojjB5

WOW - I did NOT vote then.  I misunderstood and only Liked the page, thinking that was the same as voting.  I will go back and vote too - thanks for clarifying.  :)

And, what I meant by 'no bet' is that just because the vendor makes speakers as well as an interface does not mean that they will automatically sound good together, though it is certainly possible.  I would think the JBL's a good choice, no matter the color.

@Vlada - I just went back to actually Vote for This Song, but clicking on the red button for it does not lead to any visible reaction on the page.  (there is no indication that clicking on that did anything).

It shows that the page is Liked, which is what I had done before (and thought it also voted), but again clicking on the Vote for This Song button doesn't seem to do anything.

I would hate to see you not get votes that are available and intended to register for your song.

Some time it takes to click 3 times, and it will change to "Thank you for your vote"
Thank you.

Recently my son asked for my help in choosing some active monitors as he is setting up a DAW etc. There is a great shop here in Melbourne that had many sets of speakers.

The speakers that really blew me away were the Yamaha's. They make three models HS5, HS7 and HS8. Now the 5's are lacking in bottom end as expected. The HS7's are the ones my son ended up with. Excellent bass response and just a little smaller than the HS8's. (quite cheaper too) Although I am sure the HS8's would be nice. They all had the same tweeter though so the mids and highs were the same for all of them.

Now compared to others. The cheaper Mackie's were not as nice. Coloured low end. Sorry to say this but the KRK's sounded like rubbish compared to the Yamaha's. They were totally dull and lifeless. They are not a good speaker, sorry but true. The JBL's were also very very good and came close to the Yamaha's. The Yamaha's had the edge though.

We had some very high quality reference material to use in the testing procedure. The Presonus speakers were there but we did not test them. Take a great sounding CD into a shop and compare the Yamaha's to the Presonus. That will tell you a lot.

I have the Eris 8" and they are a very nice pair of monitors to accurately mix on... Mixes translate well. I got them on a special offering, but now I don't want to part with them.

I recently upgraded my monitors and spent days reading reviews etc. I ended up going fir the JBLs and I am really happy with them. I went for the 308s but the 305s are highly spoken of. There is a lot of conversation on this topic on gearslutz that may be worth checking out.
