Has anyone tried this out, and if so can the internal FX/amp modeling/EQ/Comp. be used to shape the out going tone to Sonar?

It's noisy but it works.

I never tried the fx.

It should work. I tried an R-16 and it worked fine as an interface. I couldn't get it to work as a controller but I really didn't put any time or work into getting it to work as a controller. I don't remember anything other than it worked as an interface... so the H4n should work too. Be sure to download the newest drivers for the H4n. I have an H4 but hardly ever use it anymore. However it will make a good field recording. With mine I found I had to be really careful with the levels or the stereo track would be hotter on one side.

Get the drivers and hook it up...I wouldn't buy one just to be an interface but if you already have it... shoot bang!

Thanks, I might give it a try. I already have a great interface(tascam us1641) but for some reason it makes my bass tracks sound a little dirty...doesnt matter which of my 3 basses I plug in weither it be direct or through an FX processor. All bass trks are recorded in the -6db range.
So I thought I might try my H4n, try to shape the tone of the bass in there before recording. Next I'll be mic'ing one of my 4x10 cabs or the 15's or both...lol
Here's to chasing my tail for perfect tone!!
Cheers

As you see I also have the same interface. I find it is very transparent and have never noticed and colour added to the sound. I use input  9 or 10 at about 12 o clock. Can't remember if the pad is in or out. But if you don't like the sound of your bass it would be the bass it self that has issues, all interfaces would seemingly record it the same once the gain is set properly.

You best option would be to check out better pick ups, I have Seymour Duncan's on one and Dimarzio on the other. They are passive, active Pick up's for me always sound kinda distorted.

Other options are run the bass though a good quality pre amp.
