I think it's interesting all the techniques I've see from all the different videos on this subject. It just goes to show that whatever technique you use, if it sounds good, go with it. Nice videos.

 I'll have to try using a side mic on a snare, as I really liked the tone in the video. I usually place an omni mic to cover the heart of the kit (right over the kick, near the snare and tom.) Is this the mic position for your side mic, or a mic just pointed at the side of the snare anywhere it is convient?



FWIW, Mic'ing the "shell" of the snare (instead of - or in addition to) top/bottom is not all that uncommon.
We did that with our latest drum sample library...
The captured sound has more high-end "snap" at the expense of a little "weight" when compared to mic'ing the top.
IMO, It's a good sound.
