• SONAR
  • Possible very trivial track cloning bug - X3E.

I seem to be running into a lot of system issues today quite separate from Cakewalk. I thought I resolved them but maybe not.
I think it's since I upgraded the Focusrite mix control software.

This one though I'm not so sure of, would anybody mind checking this in X3E? Thanks...

STEPS

New Project.
Add softsynth track with Dimension Pro.
Drag in a MIDI clip into this track.
Right click, clone track. Tick all boxes apart from "Link to original clips", repetitions = 1, Starting track = 3.
Click OK.

Then.... crash.

Thanks!

Hi Alex, I cannot reproduce here. Interestingly your settings for clone came up as default for me (I rarely use clone, and thought it odd it defaulted to track 3). It inserted the clone track as Track 2. Just to check further, I re-cloned Track 1 with the same settings two more times. It inserted Track 3, and then Track 4 cleanly for me.

I was curious if setting the track number would pose an issue, but it appears that it does not (it chooses the next unused track #).

Thanks...

Yes I have the same defaults. Yes this is weird, if I enter starting track as 2 then no crash, and exactly why would it default as 3 anyway? (It probably thinks a soft synth track which it would be if split).

I have a feeling this maybe a Sonar issue, because I shouldn't have the option of starting on track 3 (that's surely a bug), and by telling it to do so is making is making it crash. Maybe my steps to reproduce are not complete enough which is why you cannot repro...

UPDATE - Now this is weird after cloning other types of tracks like AUDIO. Closing Sonar and starting it again (I did this several times before), it is now working fine. Really really odd.... I can't image this would be a driver issue.

Anyway I shall log this in the meantime:

STEPS

New Project.
Add softsynth track with Dimension Pro (For the options choose Simple instrument track only).
Drag in a MIDI clip into this track.
Right click, clone track.
Change starting track = 3.

EXPECTED

You can't do this. Only starting track 1* or 2

ACTUAL

You should only able to change the starting track to 1* or 2.

* I'm surprised a starting track of 1 is allowed as well, please tell me what would be the documented behaviour for using this?

Not quite sure what the issue is...... it all works fine here (both audio+midi and simple instrument track).

Steps are slimlined in #3 and have been reproduced in #2.

Steps in #1 should probably be ignored for the moment until I can find better ways of reproducing the issue (if indeed it is possible any more).

Thanks Jlien.

Well, it's the steps in #3 that I followed. Maybe I don't understand the Expected and Actual sections?
When there are 2 tracks, you can choose where you want the new (cloned) track to appear, either before the first track, before the second track or after the second track, no? And I can do all of these fine.

I should have added "tick Simple instrument track only" when adding the soft synth. You should only get one track before you clone not two (have updated this now).

I see what you mean, looking into it.

Well with a single audio track I get an option for a starting track as 1 or 2, and with a MIDI track 1 or 2 as well. However with a single soft synth track 1,2, and 3. Something here is not making sense to me. Cheers...

Ok, now I see what you mean. It's more apparent when you have, say, three simple instrument tracks and give their track strips different colors. If you select Clone Track on the first track and enter "4" in the Starting Track field, it ends up inserting the new track between the second and the third tracks.
