  • Automation deleted when I imported clip [SOLVED]

I deleted an audio clip and imported a different clip in its place. But I didn't notice until too late that the track automation for the duration of the clip had disappeared (i.e. displayed as a dotted line). I am wondering did this happen when I deleted the original clip, or was it importing the new clip that obliterated the automation?

My guess is that if you had "overwrite" record mode selected when importing the audio, the automation got overwritten.

Thanks for the suggestion.  I'll check this when I get home.

EDIT:
I've just checked.  It's set to "Blend Old With New" rather than "Replace".

Record modes only apply to recording, not file imports. I would guess that it did happen when you deleted the clip. Depending on how you made your selection (especially if the whole track was already selected, the automation could have been included. But if you had the Edit Filter set to Clips, and nothing selected before you clicked on a clip, it should have left the automation alone.

It probably did happen when I deleted the clip, although (as far as recall) I did have the edit filter set to "Clips".  I selected the clip only, so that's why I expected only the clip to be deleted.  I might test this again later.

I believe that these settings apply to editing as well as recording.  Placing a clip into a track via the import menu should be effectively the same as placing a clip using the mouse.  I would hope so anyway.

I've just tested it.  Selecting a clip and hitting Delete deletes both the clip and the track automation.

The solution is to use Delete Special.

There's also an option in one of the track menus along the lines of "move envelope with clip".   I wonder if that's a factor.

Thanks. I was not aware of this setting. It seems to do the trick. I notice that this is a per-project rather than a global setting.
