I signed up, got the confirmation email, and when I went there I was told I was too early.

I just signed up and it was fine. Did you click the link from the email you should have received?

8080 is a common alternate port to the default 80 for http/web services and would typically just work.
 
You could try:
a. Holding ctrl when you click the link to bypass popup blocking.
b. Checking your firewall for blocked port 8080
 
It could be an issue at the Berklee end. I see there is a 'chat with an advisor' option on their site.

I signed up yesterday. Only issue for me is that the start time is 7am here in Lismore NSW and that's when I start work...............I am the only one here though.................
