• SONAR
  • Probably a simple fix but..... (p.3)

Thanks for chiming in Noel.

I have the bnc connection going FF800 word out > motu 8282mk2 word in. Sonar will not launch and the motu is flashing 44.1, Sonar will not go past the launch screen unless I power off the motu until Sonar launches. I keep playing with the settings.

The adat connection on both the ff800 & 828 are in use by my hardware as are my spdif connections.

You have to disconnect the firewire on the 828.

How will Sonar see the inputs of the 828 without firewire connected?

It's hard to make detailed recommendations without having the actual hardware in hand, but I think it should go something like this:

- Set SONAR to ASIO mode
- Connect the FF800 via FW, and disconnect the 828 from the DAW **.
- Connect the ADAT Out of the 828 to the ADAT In of the FF800 as Noel suggested.
- Disconnect the BNC word clock; the ADAT connection will take care of sync.
- Set the MOTU to use the ADAT input as a clock reference in the Audio Console
- Set both to the same clock rate.
- Not sure about this, but I think you need to set the MOTU to pass the Analog inputs through to the ADAT Out; it may be doing this by default already IIRC.

** EDIT: It just occurred to me that you'll need to have the MOTU connected by FW in order for the Audio Console to be able to talk to it. It might be you need to maintain that connection, but then I'm not sure how you get SONAR to favor the FF800 over the MOTU when detecting available ASIO drivers.    You might need to do some reading.

I'm with Noel and Brundlefly.
  • I would route the optical ADAT out from the MOTU into the RME FF800.
  • I'd set the MOTU clock to SLAVE to the RME.
  • I'd switch back to ASIO Driver Mode

You have to explicitly set the MOTO to send ADAT outputs otherwise it sends spdif. Also you can leave the MOTO connected via firewire - as long as you aren't using the firewire connector. i.e. in ASIO you can use only the FF interface. Also its not necessary for the motu to be physically connected via firewire once it has been set up since it retains the settings internally. I have tried a very similar setup MOTU and UFX coupled via ADAT and it works fine.

Read this tech note from Motu along with the manuals for both units since this is a non trivial setup.

Alternatively you can use the ADAT out of the 828 into the FF ADAT input and use adat sync.
A much simpler solution is to use ADAT output from the 828 into the FF and use ASIO mode with just the fireface connected via firewire. The 828 will pass all its inputs digitally into the FF via ADAT optical and doesn't even need to be connected via firewire. This is a better solution since it doesn't saturate the firewire bus.

Thanks, this was the method I was trying to avoid. I was hoping the bnc connection would sync them so I did not lose 8 of my inputs which is the only reason to have an extra interface. It basically reduces the motu to a mic-pre which is fine seeing as tho I'd still have 18 ins. But the rme loses 8. I just wanted to know if anyone successfully used wdm drivers with sonar. Guess I have my answer thanks all for your help.

I dont think your problem is necessarily with wdm. You possibly have the sync settings incorrectly set between the two devices or you are saturating the firewire bus. Even RME doesn't recommend wiring two interfaces on the same firewire bus.
Did you ever have this setup working in a prior SONAR version? If it works in another version then you can start troubleshooting from that point.

I have the firewire on the mb and then a separate TI chip firewire installed. So you're saying maybe try plugging them to separate cards?

I do this all the time with. Ff 800 and a focusrite Octopre Platinum plus.

Connect the word clock between the 2 devices so that the 800 is the master.
Connect the ADAT out of the 828 to the ADAT in of the 800.

Make sure you make the software setting in the Motu so that it sends it's inputs to the ADAT out.

Then Sonar will see the FF 800 as well as ADAT 1 thru 8 they being the 8 inputs from your Motu 828.

Only the Ff800 needs a FireWire connection after you've setup the Motu to send its inputs to its own ADAT out.
