I've got an old toaster that has to almost be turned up all the way to get things done, the slots are a bit skinny, plus the bagel setting now toasts both sides of whatever is put in (instead of just the inside).  It's time for a new one, but I have no idea if any are better than others.  Here's are my requirements:

  • Two or four slots (I'd use four with buns)
  • A decent number of light to dark settings (typical)
  • The ability to toast bread and waffles (mostly waffles for me)
  • The ability to toast hamburger buns on the inside only (I use these for fish sandwiches and chicken sandwiches too)
  • Basic looks, I don't have the budget to waste on "sleek style and artistic flair" or chic.

Pretty straight-forward actually.  I mainly just want a toaster that can toast my morning waffles and buns on one side.

Any suggestions?

TIA!

Our house is where toasters come to die.

If you find a good one, please post back the make/model.  I hate wimpy toasters that dehydrate bread instead of browning it.

Hi,

If they can do bagels ... I will consider!

This is not what craigb (ITHRN) wants, but if anyone else is looking for a toaster oven this is highly recommended:

It gets used here as a regular oven for anything big enough - and it's bigger than most useless-as-an-oven toaster "ovens". It makes consistently perfect toast or english muffins.

Yeah good luck with that. Every now and then I will decide it's time to replace whatever crappy toaster I have once and for all with the established "top" model that gets rave reviews and is generally considered to be the elite choice (yep I really like toast). And every time I'm left with the impression that a really good toaster just does not exist these days.

I've tried a ton of them and have taken them all back. They all have something really annoying about them. Either the slots are too small, or the toast doesn't fully pop up because of some stupid protruding lip or other obstacle in the slot, or they don't have a setting that's long enough for English muffins (nothing worse than having to go in for a second round of toasting), or they toast unevenly, or they leak crumbs from the bottom and you're continually having to clean the counter top.

I seem to remember we had a decent toaster when I was a kid. But like most other things now, they're just slapped together in China on the cheap on behalf of companies who have long stopped giving a s*** about their reputations.

It's gubment regulations that require max toaster temps to be set at 90F

I'm a great toaster:  *rub-a-dub-dub let's eat the grub!*
