  • Final mix bounce: 24/44.1 to 16/44.1 does it matter for MP3?

Hey guys
I was asked to produce a demo for the software synth. It was hard process of making a song with only one plug in- 21 instances of Enzyme. My Sonar X3 is set to 24 bit/44.1. I can not change it because under Audio in Preferences this option is grayed out. I remember when I was hooking up Presonus StudioLive FireWire mixer, it asked me for resolution and bit rate and I selected 24/41- I do not know where that setting is. Now I am ready to bounce 21 track made with one plug in in to the stereo track. I do not know if settings of Sonar or my audio interface affect individual track bouncing when I freez every instance of soft synth. Bottom line- I need 2 tracks, and I need to deliver this demo via e-mail or upload to Soundcloud. And it is way overdue.

Do I need to bounce to the stereo track and change bit rate from 24 to 16 first, and then convert to MP3? For MO3 I am using built in to Sonar MP3 encoder. What happens if I just convert to MP3 what I have? I do not know what bit rate each track froze to. What's the best way to mix this thing down to MP3 and deliver it? Thank you.

The mp3 encoder will dither it during export for you. Hit Ctrl-A to select all tracks before "File->Export->Audio" and walk through the dialog there (mp3 requires 6 or 16 bit). Depending on what I am doing, I will often bounce the entire mix to a single track first to check it, and then simply export that "master bounce." Just be sure to select what you want to export prior to the export.

Wow- this was easy process. I did not know that I can upload wav file to the sound cloud and the upload button is right there in Sonar. Now I will want to upload everything I make!

Here is a link for the demo I made. This song is made with only one software synth, Enzyme by Humanoid Sound Systems. Please, listen my song and feel free to comment and order the plug in. I had hard time to complete entire song just with this plug in but it has some good basses for Dub Step and electronica and other good potential. Hope you enjoy it. https://soundcloud.com/vl...me-by-vlada-astral-wav

Welcome to the published world, Vlada!  :)

Yeah - if you ever did want to change your record bit-depth, you would go to a different place in Preferences to do that (you made the right choice by just letting it take care of itself in the mix down, plus changing it to 16 bits would not have affected the already-recorded clips, only those recorded after the change).

Anyways, the place to set that bit-depth is: Preferences>File>Audio Data.  Here is the documentation link for that:

(I still don't recommend changing it from your 24-bits, however).

By the way - NICE demo, that was quite intense and creative.

+1 to Bob's point to keep your current settings. You can always convert a finished file to a "lossy" format (i.e. mp3). The method you did for this project is the preferred route to go. Nice track by the way!

The "Wow- this was easy process." actually made me smile... hopefully we can get that reaction from you more often

Yeah - it was right nice hearing a happy success story from you, Vlada.

Your posts are usually something like that hitting Play has started a civil war somewhere in your system - hee hee. :)
