What are the mics they use on Imus in the Morning? I know they are a broadcast mic, duh.

Do you really think you can get much better than the SM7b, without spending a LOT of extra money. I notice on Dennis Miller's FB page, there is an SM7b pictured.

I don't have a good dynamic mic, well other than an SM57. I want an SM58 and an SM7b.. and a Shure KSM 44a. I hear really good things about that mic.

i think it's better suited to 'strong' singers, and not to super dynamic or light singers.

This is certainly valuable info! I always had the idea that the RE20 had a sort of more 'refined' sound compared to the rather 'blunt' (IMO) SM7. So, not being a 'rawk' singer, the RE20 might not be for me after all? Still want one for instruments, though...

AFAIK the SM7 is, along with the RE20, about as espensive as dynamic mics go. And, yes, I get the impression that there might be a dynamic mic out there better suited for my purposes! The Telefunken M80 and Heil PR35 are the ones I'm most intrigued by, since they're both claimed to have "condenser-like" sonic qualities, without the drawbacks of a condenser.

Hello SvenArne, I have both the SM7b and PR35. The 35 is more present than the 7b. It's got great detail for a dynamic. I use it for live vocals mainly. I'm always on the lookout for a great dynamic for live vocal and the Beyerdynamic M88 kinda has me intrigued at the moment. Not sure, but i think it might be in the same vein as the Telefunken M80. Supposed to be an excellent mic, worth a look.

Thanks! My situation is that my little room, though well treated, has nothing worthwhile to contribute to my recordings when using my condensers. So I want a dynamic that can take their place within a indie-pop vocal context when recording at home. I've never been quite satisfied with my SM7 (or my several other dynamics)!

Do you think buying a PR35 would be worthwhile when I already have the SM7B? Or is it just like an SM7 with a boosted top shelf?

They don't sound alike at all, imo. 35 is more crisp and clearer sounding. Wouldn't be redundant. Both have great rejection. 35 has two HPF settings on the mic, i think for -3 and -6dB but i don't know at what freq. The mic's literature doesn't say much about it. Definately prone to MASSIVE plosives like Ps and Bs, so you need to get used to the response and adjust your delivery and technique to it for live. It aint like a 58 where pretty much anything goes. But it's like having studio vocal clarity with a live rock band and no feedback. It's the hand version of the Heil PR30. The Beyerdynamic M88 is supposed to be an SM58 on steroids, but it cost a few bucks. I'd to check one out.

If you decide on a PR35, check out HamCity (ham/cb radios)http://www.hamcity.com/store/pc/PR35-p2051.htm. They are an authorized dealer and have the best price i know of for the mic. They're also giving a extra 5% discount until Oct 31st and they ship to Norway. HTH.

Thanks for the info! So its much more sensitive to plosives than a 58, right? That's sort of a bummer since I was hoping for a grab-and-go microphone I can sing right into without worrying too much about distance and angle. The SM7 is great for that, since it does an excellent job of taming breaths and pops. How's the proximity compared to the SM7?

You said you were contemplating the Beyer M88. Which advantages would it have over the PR-35 or SM7? Perhaps I should move it up my shortlist (€244 at DV247.com)!

Thanks for the Ham City link! That's the lowest price I've seen as well!

Can't say much about the M88 except that i like what i've read. Seems to be a great mic. I read somewhere that someone used it for everything on a record and that the record was good. Phil Collins and some others used it a lot. ------------ The Pr35 definitely requires a singer to pay attention to not causing plosives. I generally don't eat it like one could an sm58, but i do at times jsut very carefully. If you want a mic that you can eat, then i'd say there are probably others better suited for that. It also has a hot output level, so preamp gain is not an issue like the sm7b.
