The video is pretty good (in Japanese with English subtitles) and this 73 year old man had been trying to solve it for 10 years, but couldn't. He asked a TV station (or some show) to help him solve it......interesting bunch of people tried to solve it.

The answer lies with Alexander the Great.  He solved the gordian knot by taking out his sword and cutting it to pieces.  Then he found Hephaestion and the two of them got a drink.
