Mr. torture
I just upgraded to this card, I was using an Echo Layla 3G, which by the way worked on every system I had without any install problems. It was just outdated and would sometimes lock up on my windows 7 machine.
I Installed the card, downloaded and installed the latest drivers. I am running Sonar X1E, 64 bit, windows 7 quad core i7, 16 GB Ram.
The card is recognized, but when I try to open a project or simply add a VST to a single audio track it locks up, freezes the computer, loses audio completely.
I have no idea what to do, I changed PCIe slots and at least started getting sound, but it all went downhill again pretty quickly. I tried ASIO, WDM nothing still the same.

One possibility is your projects are set to say 44.1 and the card is set to 48 or ?
But Sonar should just flash a warning not crash, but then again your using X1.

Card is set to 44.1, same as the projects.

Contact RME, see if there are any firmware or driver updates. You're sure you installed the 64 bit driver? Does TotalMix work alright?

I did send them an email and I do have the correct driver installed. There was a firmware update that I tried to install, but it locked my computer up, completely frozen. I had to shut it off to get out. Hopefully RME responds back soon.
I opened the mixer a couple times and moved some faders, one time it froze the computer as well. I am new to the software package RME comes with, so I didn't do much else.

Sounds like there may be something physically wrong with your card, especially since the firmware update failed like that. Hope you get sorted soon. Doesn't seem like a Sonar issue from where I'm standing.

Wow, I hope not. It's brand new! Hopefully RME gets back to me soon.

Just a guess based on your info is that it is the computer. The Echo card had the issue too, right?

I strongly suggest you remove the fan from the CPU and give it a vacuum. An old toothbrush will help. They tend to have twist knobs rather then screw on fans now. Do not clean the conductive gel off the heatsink.
When the dust builds up in there something will give.
Regular maintenance. try it. I hope it is it.
The other thing is a non compatability or failing component like a grahics card. Also some connectors get sticky with all the heat in there. Disconnect and clean with electrical cleaner, including the PCIe cards, RAM etc.
Good luck.

The Echo had no where near the issues. It would freeze once in a while, do to starting and stopping too quickly over and over again. The RME I simply cannot get to work at all. I load a project it wont even play, freezes the computer completely. I started a new project, added a single audio track and guitar amp sim instance. It froze on the second guitar chord I strummed. It's unstable as Charles Manson. I heard only positive things about RME, researched forever for the most stable PCIe soundcard out there and the RME stuff was always suggested. Not too impressed so far, not after dropping $900.00

I am having a hard time understanding why you thought the Echo Layla 3G was "outdated", as Echo has traditionally worked hard to keep their drivers up to date, and their products (especially the 3G) are typically very good - their specs might be a dB shorter than RME here and there, but I could never justify paying triple (or more) for an RME what I paid for my Echo.  Anyway - I have a Layla 3G and it has operated flawlessly on my Windows 7 system for several years, so I, too, suspect there is something up with your system that caused your previous lockups with your Layla and is now causing your RME problems.  Echo's drivers have always been very stabile for me on various machines and op systems, so I don't think that was the problem.  From what I understand, RME's drivers are fairly stabile (I don't know this from experience) so I wouldn't suspect their drivers, either.  I think the suggestion to look for something heat-related in your system is good, and I would be inclined to check memory as well to be sure there are no issues there.  Maybe your power supply is overtaxed?  That's all I can think of at the moment, but I hope you get is sorted quickly.
