• SONAR
  • "Cannot write file--disk may be full" crash when loading a project

This is happening to me more frequently these days... I'll open a song I was working on the prior session, and I get the dreaded yellow triangled explanation point with "Cannot write file--disk may be full"  which, of course, isn't the case.  If I try and play what played fine before, crash, control/alt/delete then restart X3 or reboot.... repeats.

I've tried saving to other disks which sometimes works.  I've varied my disk saving location (ie, song hard drive, ssd current projects directory, or external drive... doesn't matter.

sometimes I can change the name and it'll save and then play fine.  Sometimes not, then have to go back to prior version.

Any thoughts?  Annoying as, well you know...

BTW, I've had this happen enough and sent in the "Fault Reporter" minidumps but awhile back this stopped working with the message, (big red circle with an "X") "Unhandled exception has occurred in your application. If you click Continue, the application will ignore this error and attempt to continue. If you click Quit, the application will close immediately"   needless to say, no go on this front anymore.... the details button reveils the following:
"
See the end of this message for details on invoking
just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

************** JIT Debugging **************
To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this
application or computer (machine.config) must have the
jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging
enabled.
For example:
<configuration>
<system.windows.forms jitDebugging="true" />
</configuration>
When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the computer
rather than be handled by this dialog box."

looks like the JIT is reporting that the cakewalk crash reporter is crashing - lol

for the disk write error - does any other program have issues saving to the disk? I'd make sure your disk is not beginning to fail, check the system/application event logs for any disk related errors - maybe try running chkdsk against your drives

See if the trick in this thread works for you. Took a while to find it, but that thread is also very similar (and not all useful).

Edit: Here is the post I was actually looking for that Craig had done in the same thread (try the article in his link there).

Some folks reported success in the past, by increasing a parameter in the Aud.ini file called DiskRecBufferSize, from 64 to 512.

Others reported success by deleting the Aud.ini file (Sonar will rebuild it when it starts).

Noel had posted something a while back about if you are using bundles.  Something about the bundle size growing.

And others have had this when their projects had mixed sample rates, occasionally.

Are you using 32-bit Sonar or 64-bit?

Anyways - I hope something in one of the above bits is helpful.

If you do want to try increasing DiskRecBufferSize in Aud.ini, open the file with Notepad and make your changes.

Thanks, guys! I'll give those tips a gander tonight when I begin mucking around.  I'm also going to try loading a troublesome song and go away for a bit.  I think Kontakt may be the underlying problem as I succeeded in loading the most recent troublesome song when I broke off to make coffee and voila! success in playing/saving.  I have noticed Kontakt often is continuing to load without any indication.

Thanks again.  Getting to the root of things would be nice.  Aside from this, my time with X3 is orgasmic, thus, all in all it is an annoyance at the start of sessions at times.  Hopefully your thoughts will result in utter bliss from start to finish, except for my lousy drumming skills!

BTW, forum search is a bit frustrating at times as I tried to find posts you located, met... first, get no results then we're told to wait awhile to search again!  Seems dumb... when I'm googling, I keep refining search terms but here I need to go have a pot of tea first?  A big annoyance at an otherwise stellar forum resource.

It's not Jit and this is not an ASP.NET app so you don't need Just In Time debugging.

It's sending the error message to cakewalk via SOAP in XML format, maybe your firewall is blocking the Cakewalk server?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SOAP

What's weird is that this seems to be errors with the .NET framework, weird because Cake told me there don't use .NET libraries but it definitely looks like they do here!!!! They are at least using it to send your error report (SOAP).

So the GAC is corrupted perhaps, generally I would clear the GAC cache out first but probably best to update/reinstall .NET:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=40773

BTW this should also be available via windows update (probably the optional area).

If that doesn't work I have one other suggestion that that is deleting what is in the GAC (Global Assembly Cache).
That should  fix your error reporting issue anyway unless you do have a firewall blocking it.

Although it actually does look like your firewall:
System.Net.WebException: The request failed with HTTP status 404: Not Found.

You can't see their server, and Cake's code isn't handling this error correctly. Still I would update .NET 4 nevertheless.

Bah - He could probably add those JIT debugging lines to the FaultReporter.exe.config located in the cakewalk\shared utilities\ folder... Not important though hence I didn't give it any further thought just found it amusing that an exception occurred with the faultreporter trying to report an exception - seriously you got to see the humour in that right?

Although, your most likely right with saying firewall could be blocking it from sending the report to cakewalk...

The real issue though is why is there are problem with full disk being reported??

Jimmy it's not JIT in just the way Sonar is not Apple!
Yes I get the humour, but it ain't JIT :)

I have logged CWBRN-24249 specifically to do with the .NET SOAP error reporting bug when it cannot see the server, it should in fact should just display something like "Cakewalk problem reporter server is unavailable" instead, but clearly this has not been implemented (it would be an enhancement request in fact, however all error exception messages are in fact bugs.. although I hold my breath on this one).

yeah I'm with ya no probs - though the real problem is why full disk is being reported
