Just upgraded to X3 (from x1). Love it so far. I can't seem to solve a latency issue with midi. Latency is immediate on listening to a keyboard prior to recording or playback. Using a Yamaha p-200 piano into a Sapphire pro 40. set up asio at lowest possible pro 40 buffer (240) (but changed back to 512 with no obvious difference). Is there some other setting I'm missing?

If you're bored can you also suggest why my Fender jazz bass sounds so awesome in x3 compared to x1? did they do something?

Well, what settings are currently in place for:
 
1.  Audio interface: Sample Rate, ASIO Buffer Size
 
2.  Sonar: Sample Rate, Record Bit-Depth, Total Roundtrip Latency?
 
Also, if the above are OK, and you have a Total Roundtrip Latency of at or under 10 milliseconds in Sonar, then I am wondering if perhaps you have one or more plugins that may be not meant for tracking, but are instead plugins that are meant for mixing and mastering.
 
You could toggle on/off Bypass All Effects by hitting the letter 'E' on your computer keyboard, then seeing if the latency goes away.  If it does, then one or more of the plugins are causing your latency issues.  Hitting 'E' again will turn the effects back on, by the way, when you are through testing that out.
 
Please review and respond to the above - there may be some other things to look at, and we should be able to get to the bottom of it.

Cool test with the bypass toggle using the "E" key, Bob. It helped me determine my latency issues on a song project just now.
 
Plus, until you mentioned it, I didn't realize I was overloading my tracking with all these plug-ins meant for mixing and mastering. Sometimes its so tempting to jam all these cool plug-ins into a track I'm recording for, say, guitar. I add EQ, Parametric, Compressor, and on and on until the window is full and my computer screams at me...

Sample rates for both sonar and interface are 44.1 interface buffer at 512
latency input is 12.1 ms 532 samples
latency output is 20.1 ms 885 samples
latency total is 32.1 ms 1417 samples
And I'm using dimension pro X64
Under audio data I found a set record bit depth of 16. Is that what you are asking for?
 

Just tried hitting "E" and latency disappeared, however, I'm not using any plug-ins on the midi channel. Does "E" also disable effects on master/busses? Maybe it is a plug in there?

Look-ahead and Latency
 
The LP-64 Multiband Compressor uses look-ahead peak detection to reduce the gain just before a peak. "Look-ahead" means the limiter analyzes the audio input ahead of time by delaying the output. Like many mastering linear-phase plug-ins, the LP-64 Multiband Compressor requires a fairly large look-ahead--on the order of 20 milliseconds. This typically does not present a problem as mastering tools are most often utilized in post-production work.

This is SUCH a common kind of thing - I wish that some kind of 'Common Latency Causes' sticky thread could be posted, with suggested ASUI settings, a list of the kinds of plugins that can induce tracking latency, the Bypass All Effects key binding, a list of the Cakewalk plugins that induce tracking latency, and I suppose a running list of 3rd-party plugins that induce tracking latency.  I suppose some info about DPC Latency Checker and LatencyMon would also be helpful.
 
Anyways, plugins that use look-ahead processing, or giant bunches of CPU, can cause massive latency when tracking.  Adjusting for that by increasing the buffer size is fine for getting avoiding the problem for mixing and mastering, but just will not work for tracking.
