I use my UFX via USB and have had no problems whatsoever even with high channel counts at low latency.  RME drivers are the best in the biz. I record orchestras on location and the stability of the interface with the added USB port in front for a backup is a dream come true.  I have used Mackie, ECHO, Motu, Steinberg, E-MU, Tascam, M-Audio, and Avid (Digi) interfaces and the UFX is definitely the top of the litter.  Don't think twice about it, get one if you can.

RME recommends using USB for lowest latency.
I think there is a 32 sample hidden buffer when using FW.
I think I have that right.
Love mine by the way...

I also have my RME UFX connected via USB. Been using it for the past 6 months and it's ROCK SOLID. As far as the OP's question about performance with high channel count, I can't comment...yet. I'm in process of building my home studio so haven't given it a thorough test, but with its limited use it's much more dependable and versatile than my previous interface (E-MU 1820m). TotalMix workflow is great for live monitoring. And the clarity of the sound is amazing. The 1820m converters were good, but this takes it to a new level. Another satisfied UFX customer!

All I have is the RME Babyface, and it has been working via USB2.0 for over a year fine.

Ok thanks for your comments Daniel, Bapu, Tom, DPete, and spacealf. I'm getting close to pulling the trigger on a UFX. You've helped me make the decision.
