It turns out if you don't have your MASTER.ins setup correctly and imported right, Bank Select is impossible.
In other words, if there are no banks to switch from/to, there is no usage of the bank button.

Check there first.

thanks for your response unfortunately i am a novice at this and have a file  which is supposed to be correct????

can you point me to an example of a file, part of one, or set of instructions that is correct

I guess my question lies more so along the lines of should we ever have to manually edit the Master.ins file?  Why check for typos?  Isn't the file automatically updated depending on what instrument definitions are "defined" and "imported" in the MIDI preferences?

I've tried and tried to get MIDI back changes/select working in X3 and can't. Was previously working fine for years.
All I get when I click the BANK button next to the track is "none".
    Anyone else?

Problem 2: instrument definitions are also not working at all.

spoke to cakewalk and for me this was the solution

this presumes you have selected your instrument in preferences > mid > instruments and assigned it to all 16 channels if not then select the specific midi channel for the instrument that has multiple banks

Thanks. I could have swore I selected my channel!  That's hardware basics right there... [huge facepalm]!!!  Anyway, tried it just now, and the NanoSynth is now responding correctly.  I've done a couple restarts since the last test, so perhaps that cleared up any Sonar junk.
