  • Is Focusrite saffire pro firewire a good interface? (p.2)

Every new Presonus firewire interface I've tried has had a hardware problem of some type.  The last one was a Firestudio Project and it had one dead channel (confirmed by Presounus tech support after being on the phone with them over an hour).  They were all returned to the music stores.

On the other hand I have a Presonus dual BlueTube and it works good, especially after I replaced the Chinese 12AX7 with a NOS RCA 12AX7. However, it is the typical low voltage 'starved plate" circuit for the tube section.

Note that I'm *not* talking about the older Presonus Firestudio models.
Didn't use or recommend those...
I'm talking about the new "Audiobox VSL" (USB 2) models.
HUGE difference in performance...

The new USB line may be OK, but because of the track record I've had with Presonus, I'm now 'gun shy" and have given up on them.

I'd also recommend you checkout the new Presonus 1818 VSL.
Good sound... and ultra low round-trip latency.
Jim, on your earlier recommendation in another topic here, I was looking forward to trying out the AudioBox VSL USB interfaces, especially after reading this info on Presonus' site:

http://www.presonus.com/c...-Digital-Audio-Latency

However, when trying out the Audiobox VSLs last month, I could not find any 32 sample ASIO buffer size option available, nor any "Performance Mode" USB buffer size option. Rather disappointing.

It turns out that Presonus had removed both those options in their latest drivers:

"AudioBox Series 1.2 Release Notes:
Date: May 31, 2012
---
* PC Only - Performance Mode has been removed to improve driver performance and device compatibility when running with low buffer settings.
* PC Only - Removed Option for 32 Samples Per Buffer
* PC Only - Operating at 44.1KHz or 48KHz Lowest Buffer Option is 64 Samples
* PC Only - Operating at 88.2KHz or 96KHz Lowest Buffer Option is 128 Samples"

Fyi, Vin C. at DAWBench recently re-tested the 44 VSL with these current drivers and found slightly higher latency compared to earlier driver version:

(Dunno what you meant by "ultra-low round-trip latency" but if latency is a foremost concern then it might be worth using the earlier drivers)

Or, maybe using a Mac...
