  • [Solved] Registry Cleaner BROKE ProChannel... Beware...

When I load new instruments and on some channels that are already set up, the following is happening:

1]  The bottom module does not load,
2]  When right-clicking to remove them, nothing happens after selecting "remove",
3] The button for the EQ pop-out is missing...

How do I fix this?

Is this in a specific project or in general?
I had it in one project, turns out it had somehow inexplicably become "corrupted" and the "solution" was to move all my tracks and data to a new project.

It worked perfectly this morning.  Only thing I can thing caused it was cleaning up my registry.  I tried opening older projects and all of them do this...  It's not the project...

IMHO registry cleaning is overrated and should be used only to fix specific issues, and only if you know enough about the registry to be able to fix things manually. Hopefully you backed up the registry before making any changes, but if not, you may need to re-install Sonar to return its registry entries to normal if the registry is indeed the issue.

That is really the only thing I did between this morning when everything worked and this afternoon when I had the issues...  Should I run the main installation or just the latest patch?

You can try running the latest patch first to see if that solves the problem. If not, set a system restore point, and un-install/re-install Sonar. Hopefully everything will work, but I can't promise anything because the registry is a strange, dark, and mysterious place and who knows what happened to it...

I installed the complete SONAR and latest patch just over the previous one and all is fixed again...

Will use this as a reminder to leave registry alone...

Glad you got it fixed. You should update the thread title to reflect that: 'Registry Cleaner Broke Prochannel'.

Here's a quote:

Mark Russinovich (Author of the "Bible", Windows Internals, co-founder of Winternals and Sysinternals, and since both companies were bought by Microsoft, now a senior Microsoft employee) was asked:

Hi Mark, do you really think that Registry junk left by uninstalled programs could severely slow down the computer? I would like to 'hear' your opinion. His reply fairly captures my own view:

No, even if the registry was massively bloated there would be little impact on the performance of anything other than exhaustive searches.

On Win2K Terminal Server systems, however, there is a limit on the total amount of Registry data that can be loaded and so large profile hives can limit the number of users that can be logged on simultaneously.

I haven't and never will implement a Registry cleaner since it's of little practical use on anything other than Win2K terminal servers and developing one that's both safe and effective requires a huge amount of application-specific knowledge.

Funnily enough I have been to a few of Mark's conferences a while back.

When you ran the registry cleaner (was it cc cleaner? was it up to date?) did you do a backup?

If you find the need to use these tools a backup is extremely important so you can roll back. I agree they should be used with caution. Occasionally they can be useful but they should not be implemented as part of a regular maintenance routine.
