Yup - I am following both threads.  I am looking for a response in that thread to some questions I posed.

I'm following both threads and let's be clear here, it may or may not be the same problem (probably won't be), but it's the same symptom. Best keep the threads seperate.

BTW if you are that far behind in windows update you may need to run it several times, and don't forget about the optional updates as well.... Thanks.

I have not yet (that I can remember) experienced crashing while opening or closing projects, only when closing the program, which always entails also closing a project.  I suppose I should start closing projects first, then closing the program, to see which is the issue.  I will see if I can reproduce it today after the major windows update...

Closing projects before exitting is also safer to ensure saves take until your issue is better defined.

+1 to this recommendation. Many windows updates need to be done sequentially, so it can only install "so far" before a reboot is required and the next "set" can be done (run Windows Update as many times as needed till no more "important" updates are listed).

Edit: I just checked my Win7 and I have 253 updates... so you may still be a bit shy on numbers

I also have had crashes on close.
I'm running Sonar x3d in 64 bit mode and if everything else, vsts etc, also is 64 bit and nothing 32 bit the close crashes seems to cease?
