I may be blind I did a search of the forums about using video in Sonar nothing came up and I couldn't find any tutorial videos from cakewalk. I'm not looking to do anything super fancy, I have a webcam but it only records sound in mono so I thought I could just use the cam for the video but record the stereo track into Sonar X3 then sync it together for a YouTube vid.  Is that doable and are there any vids from cakewalk on the subject? Thanks for your help.

Yes, that is doable. However, you cannot edit the video (cut/paste/move), it's there only for visual reference for you to do the audio.

- start by importing the video : File - Import - Video

After that, you'll see the audio and video in a separate track, from there you can track Sonar as usual, and when done, just do a File-Export-Video.

Re-reading your post, if you intend to record video to the webcam, and at the same time record audio to Sonar, it's also doable, with a different approach. However, the webcam is not operated within Sonar, and you have to start the webcam recording session separately, and it may not work well on slower system.

It'll be easier too if mono audio is capture with the webcam so you can match / align the audio easier, else if that is not possible, you will have to use visual from webcam and audio from Sonar to align them.

1. Start Sonar recording first.
2. Start the webcam recording later (so it won't record while you're operating on Sonar)
3. You may want to do a count in, to make video/audio alignment easier later.

When recording is done, cut the Sonar audio to just before the count in.

Do the video import as usual. Then you can align the wave file from Sonar's stereo track comparing it to the imported mono wave (or visually, if you cannot record the mono audio). Then mute the mono track and export the video.

This is exactly what I'm looking to do. I've got a decent webcam, but the sound is certainly nowhere near as good as my recording software (and quality mics, etc.). Does anyone know if this can be done in Sonar 6 PE? I'd like to line up superior audio sound to the video capture.

I'm not using Sonar 6 PE, so you have to check if it there is an option to import video ?

If it does, you can try it out. You may have to set the video recording resolution lower, depends if your system can take it (while Sonar is recording too). If the webcam application (Logitech ?) and Sonar combo is choking the system, you can try to use VirtualDub to do the webcam capture, as it's a little lighter on processing. I've tried that, didn't quite get the setting correct, making video and audio out of sync.

Yes there is (as far as I recall).

Some notes:

You can't edit video within Sonar - that's a given, and it's not its purpose.

You can sync up audio to video within Sonar. Usually, you want to record audio on the camera as well as the audio you're recording in stereo. You'll want a reference point to match the audio from the camera to the stereo recording. Film studios used to use a 'clapper' board for this purpose, but any loud noise will do.

Myself, since I use Sony's Vegas video edit, use an extension called pluraleyes to do this. It will automatically sync up tracks based on matching audio - works like gang busters for lip-synced music videos.
