Any ideas?  What's up with Mojave?  Sweetwater is constantly pushing them..   Could an AKG really do it?

Peace

EDIT = we seem to be having a dropout with the under $1,000...  Let's shoot for, "under one thousand, but I upped it $1,500."

Cheers

I wasn't blown away by the Mojave, but it seems like a solid contender.

My favorite that I've used in that price range is the Bock 195 (actually, the old 95).  Fet, fat switch.  great, solid mic.

I just got my damaged Oktava 319 back from Michael Joly w/ the mods done.  I haven't used it yet except on my voice to test - I should be doing some vocal/guitar stuff w/ it tonight.  That might be a contender less than that.  Loved it before the mod, tho it was dark.  We'll see about it after.
Another way, although less general use, is the Royer 101 ribbon.  It has a brighter back side.

Your best bet (esp. for vocals) is to find a studio w/ some examples of stuff you can afford.  Many studio engineers like nothing better to talk shop and express their opinions.  Much like this forum, except they actually do the work all day.

I'm impressed..  Those look like great choices...  @ AT, that bock is beautiful..  @ batsbrew, I am definitely going to look into the Shure.

AT, I hear what you are saying about the studio.  Its a thought swirling in the back of my head.  But if I can fake this sound, by home-depot'ing my closet into a vocal booth, and getting a great mic, I'm inclined to do it that way...  I'm not trying to record my vocals..  So there are other variables..

Thanks ya'll

The Bock (Soundeluxe) U95 was a great mike...you don't see many that are being resold

AT4060 is nice but not extremely "tubey"

I have a Peluso 2247SE which is outstanding...find one used (you're looking for a $10,000 sound, right?)

At that range, the Pearlman TM-1 is a contender, though it'll be on the hairy edge of that range. A really nice mic though. Look around and you'll find plenty of love for it.

There are 5:

Pearlman mentioned above
Telefunken AK 47
Telefunken AR51
Telefunken CU29
For some vocalists, not all, a TLM49.

Just kidding about the 5 but these would be my picks.
