Hey there, this is my first attempt at mixing keyboard solos and since this forum has a higher % of keyboard players than most of the other forums I frequent I thought I'd post this here.  Keys sounds just seem to vary more from monitor to monitor so I guess I'm looking to see if the keys lead and guitar lead match (I know the snare sounds like crap - not looking at that right now).

EDIT - Updated mix with keys left-ish and guitars right-ish.

http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=13156219 Keys melody starts around 1:38, first keys solo starts around 1:50 and then the guitars and keys trade off.

Thanks!

Well, I don't play keys but this sounds just great to me. Fantastic tune, great playing and the mix rocks to my ears. That ending bit kicks *ss,  reminds me a bit of King Crimson's Discipline, not the tone but the playing around with intervals. Yeah, I like this one.

Thanks for taking the time to listen, Kevin.  Although I like Prog I was never a huge King Crimson fan so I have to admit I had to look up that song.  And I do hear what you're talking about.

I'm glad you liked it.

Excellent Pete - the playing is the shizzle and the mix sounds really well balanced to me

Nice use of the stereo field with those guitars. You've certainly got a nice prog rock track there with a classic keyboard solo.....nice.

If there is one thing I would change regarding the keys is perhaps the reverb which is pushing them back compared to the guitars.  Other than that nicely played and produced track.  Thanks for sharing.

Thanks man!

Thanks.  I played all the guitars and bass, but I can't take credit for the keys.

I don't normally like reverb on my melody and/or lead guitar parts (although I usually have a good amount of delay on there). The keyboard player sent me his tracks with a tad of verb already in his tracks.  ...hmmmm...I'll have to listen and think about this one.

Thanks for taking the time to listen.

Nice tune, Pete!

I d/l'd it so I can listen to it later with headphones, so this may be incorrect, but it seems to me that when you start the keys/guitar trade-offs, they seem to come from the same point in the stereo field, more or less dead center. When I think of doing step-outs, the musicians might be side-by-side, but there's still a bit of separation, if only visually.

It just felt a little odd to me when one instrument "replaced" the other in space.

Of course, "odd" is why I love Ozric Tentacles!

Thanks.  Panning sounds like a good idea.

Cool tune!   I really liked that, on many levels.

Mix-wise, the comments about how the key and guitar solos seem to "replace each other" seems about right - I would personally pan them apart, just not at extremes since there's good width already in the mix.

PS... that was a unique ending.
