  • Sizing tracks in Track View

Used to be I could hit Ctrl-Up and -Down to make all my tracks bigger or smaller. That doesn't do it anymore, apparently it's been "improved" in some unknown mysterious way. I have enjoyed the Auto Track Zoom, that's been a nice feature. But sometimes I want to "clear my head" (as if...) and just scrunch the whole enchilada to minimum row height. I know there are keystrokes to adjust the view to encompass the whole project on screen, but really, I never use that. Sometimes I just want the whole thing smallified.

I guess in short, I don't understand how track sizing works in X3.

Another telling but only semi-related thing - Cakewalk take note - is that my first instinct to get help is to type it here rather than go to Sonar's documentation. It's got everything in it, perhaps, but it's very hard to find anything. Cakewalk needs to grok the concept that people don't want to know how to do a bunch of related things to get to what they need to know. I will need help how to do a very specific thing, and the help's answer will be to introduce me to entire set of features in that category, expecting me to set aside my project to learn this whole new functionality, when all I really need at the moment is a tiny thing so I can keep on working.

Shift + F will fit the entire project to screen but it won't override Auto track Zoom.
Switch this off first

I haven't learned the new Zoom bindings (because I never use them) but when I want to just find something in the user guide quickly I simply use google with the search terms "Sonar X3 + [whatever I'm looking for]" and the online user guide is generally at the top of the search entries along with multiple possibilities below it. Once in the online manual there are related topic links at the bottom of each entry and  of course you can use the guides navigation buttons to move back and forth to previous/next entries.

In your case I'd use Sonar X3 + Zoom + Keybindings... and I just tried it and didn't get what I wanted so I switched it to "shortcuts" and found the binding list.

Seems to be Ctrl + Arrow keys for both vertical and horizontal zooms unless the manual is out of date. You can check if those keys are bound to something else through the Edit > Preferences menu.

Cheers.

Maybe I misunderstood but doesn't shift / F key do that?

Shift + F will size the project horizontally as well as vertically

Yes, but I think the OP is talking about zooming tracks only vertically, which is what Ctrl Up/Down does (and it's working fine here so I don't know why it's not working for the OP).

Thanks for all the responses! Shift-F is not what I'm after. It sizes the project so the whole thing fits on the screen. What I want is for every track and folder to be shrunk to its minimum size. There is often a lot of blank space at the bottom this way. What I like is to be able to "reset" my brain, ask myself "ok, what exactly is it I have here?" Also it is useful for adding new tracks. If you hit Shift-F and then add a new track, it scrolls a little, which is annoying.

And I find no value at all in the ability to resize track folders. I only use them for organizational purposes, and the occasional folder-based solo and mute. I wish there was a way to tell Sonar that I never want folders to be any taller than the minimum. (Unrelated wish: I wish I could tell Sonar not to show the "Clip summaries" along the track folder. That just confuses me no end, as they look exactly like regular clips.)

The Ctrl-Up/Down arrows don't do what I'm after. Sometimes they only resize the selected tracks. If I Ctrl-Down to make the selected track taller, then do Ctrl-Up to shrink it, SOMETIMES that will make everything shrink, but just as often not. And sometimes tracks will shrink but not the folders they are in.

And yes, I have Auto Track Zoom turned off.

How about this? Hit Ctrl+A, then hold Shift and drag up/down the track border. Someone mentioned this already?

Try to right click on the trackfolder and click on "lock track height".
Minimize the folder first
