  • [Solved] Recording Audio Output of Yamaha Keyboard - Disappointing, or I'm doing it wrong.

Hi folks,

I've just got a new keyboard, a Yamaha PSR S650. It has its own speakers, 1 Stereo (I'm told) Output/Phones and USB.
I wanted this keyboard to act as a way to trigger softsynths but also to record the actual sounds on the keyboard - they are very realistic, especially the guitars.

I can get it to trigger softsynths via the USB, no problem.

My problems: When I record the audio, the result is a MONO recording. (A single line of audio is drawn).
Also, the quality of what is recorded is nowhere near the quality of what I hear when I'm playing the keyboard through its own speakers. Furthermore, it is very quiet, and any audio I record requires me to turn the gain knob to maximum just to get it somewhere near to the 'norm' I would expect from when I use softsynths.

Where am I going wrong?

Thanks,
Dave

Are you connecting this to your Audiophile with 1 chord?

It looks like you can connect a stereo 1/4 inch to two 1/4 inch from your keyboard to your inputs to your Audiophile. I don't know for sure but I'm guessing a single stereo chord won't work properly.

Does the keyboard act as a AI (audio interface) via USB?

Are you actually routing to a stereo Sonar track?
So your Yamaha PSR S650, volume knob is at maximum volume...
But is it really at maximum volume? There's often a hidden parameter somewhere on the keyboard to boost the volume.
Finally try adjusting the M Audio Audiophile 192 pad controls, the other options should be tried first.

Cheers

Hi Guitarpima - Thanks for your reply, no the keyboard doesn't act as an interface.
I've just been reading around the subject and I'm wondering if I have the wrong audio cables?? (I didn't know there were different types - I'm not a guitarist ).

Could you explain this - At the moment I have an audio cable that has only 1 black ring on its point. It's going from the keyboard into the 'In Left' of my audiophile. I then select 'In Left' on the track. Do I need a different cable? An adapter? Or am I barking up the wrong tree?

How do you make a track mono or stereo?

I think the keyboard naturally plays things at '100' and I could probably boost it to '127', but this won't make much difference.

Looks like you have just one output socket out the keyboard? So the output jack that needs to be plugged in is probably 1/4 inch stereo, and this will probably need to be split into two quarter inch mono jacks for your interface (left and right)... Double check this...

Below is a picture of a stereo jack. Mono jack has one ring:

Of course the input volume will be controlled from your sound interface...

Yep, as mentioned above, a 'Y' cable is required ( 1 stereo jack to 2 Mono ) plugged into left/right inputs on soundcard.

Yes, I have only one audio out from the keyboard.
Could you tell me how to do that? What would I need to buy? Are there adapters/splitters?

Aah, thanks Wizard 71.
So once I've done this, do you think the quality and volume of the signal in Sonar will be increased?

Yes. But it's your rig you tell us what happens :)
